Tuvan Throat Singing

"The art of Tuvan throat singing is a style in which two or more pitches sound simultaneously over a fundamental pitch, producing a mesmerizing, even entrancing sound. The history of Tuvan throat singing reaches very far back. Many of the male herders can throat sing, and women are beginning to practice the technique as well. The popularity of throat singing among Tuvans seems to have arisen as a result of geographic location and culture. The open landscape of Tuva allows for the sounds to carry a great distance."

"It is simply the harmonized sounds that they are able to produce from deep within their throats Ordinarily, melodies are created by isolating the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th partial in accordance with the harmonic series (if fundamental frequency were C3, the overtones would be: G5, B♭5, C6, D6, E6, G6). The base pitch is typically around a G below Middle C."







What do you guys think of this practice? It is alone in the world and completely unique to Tuva/Mongolia. While I wouldn't listen to it, it's amazing.

Its kind of odd and doesn't sound too pleasant to me...horses for courses I suppose.

I prefer American throat singing.

I'm just messing. Not too pleasant to my ears, but it's their culture and the feat is actually quite amazing.

It's very interesiting and it sounds a bit hilarious at the same time, can't say I enjoy it much though.

I'd have to agree with what everyone said about it being none too fun to hear, but it's really neat for them to be able to do it.

It reminds me of Pig-snorting, the new, yet awful, craze which the Goth and Scene crew seem to love, however, I think Mongolian traditions are a very unique thing so well done to them.

It can be quite beautiful sometimes and gives me goose bumps.

Ok what is with the forum and throat singing. I swear in the year and a half ive been here its come up at least 4 times.

I actually love this...it was also common among Turkic tribes.

It's teh representation of a culture, music. It's ethnic, how can you not like something ethnic. It is the most natural product of humans and probably has very very old roots. That alone is enough to make it interesting.
And yes, I like this thing...not all though, some songs. And it'd be better if I do not see the faces of the guys trying to make this voice

Now let's romanticize, It is night time and is very cold. You are in the steppes. You are the freest person, your gods are the nature. You are a nomad, the second level after hunter-gatherer. Nothing connects you to any land. YOu are the freest person in the middle of nowhere. You are with your friends, horses and women. You make a camp, and in middle of the night you light a fire. You sit around it with the few people in the camp...and you sing your song with your comrades.
