    Default Elephants

A question, as I have been caught out a number of times by this...

It would appear that Elephants count ( and act ) as a siege assault weapon.

This means that an army with them does not need to wait while siege equipment is built, but can attack immediately.

I have been caught out by this in the campaign, and it left me baffled until I saw ( in a city siege after the rams had been burned ) an elephant head for the gates and proceed to batter it down !

Is this standard RTW ( ie a built-in elephant attack ) or XC ? I can see a "Special Attack" on the elephant unit card, but no link in the units file to describe it.

    Any info welcome.

PS. What tactics do you use to defeat them ? Personally, I shower them with arrows/javelins as soon as possible.

That's always been in RTW since vanilla, all I did was to rebalance the elephants a bit so they are not MBTs.
Don't try them against stone walls though, boiling oil tends to turn them into fried meat very fast.

And yes, missiles works pretty well against them, especially javelins.

Thanks. I never experienced it before in RTW !

The other thing I had never seen before was a full rebellion. As the Ptolomaics I have 3 stacks of rebels in Judea to cope with !

At least, though, the advisor popped up to tell me

the special attack only appears when the elephant goes mad, and it kills the rampaging ellies

Although they may kil your own army i try to have the elephants rampage through my enemy. Killing many of their (and sometimes my) armies.

but they tend to go into your own army, even when they arein the midst of the enemy army. When ellies rampage in my battles, i kill them when they are on enemies army: great meat masses do big damage when falling into the soldiers...
