Winter system drops record snow, chills the South

AP – A U.S. Postal Service worker finds it easier to walk in the street rather than the sidewalk while delivering …

By JEFFREY COLLINS, Associated Press Writer Jeffrey Collins, Associated Press Writer – 1 min ago
COLUMBIA, S.C. – A bitter chill is settling in across the eastern half of the country, threatening crops, closing schools and making Charleston, S.C., feel more like New York City. Records snows were reported over the weekend in Vermont, and farmers in Florida scrambled Monday to save strawberries and tomatoes.
The deep freeze will last for at least the rest of the week. The National Weather Service said the mercury could fall below zero in St. Louis later this week for the first time since 1999.
In Burlington, Vt., a weekend snowstorm dumped more than 33 inches, breaking a single-storm record of nearly 30 inches set in 1969.
Most took it in stride, but some took it too far: Vermont State Police cited a man after stopping him pulling a sled — with a rider in it — behind his car on Interstate 89 on Sunday. He was cited for driving with a suspended license.
It was a similar scene in upstate New York, where so-called "lake effect snow" blanketed parts of the state with more than 3 feet.
In Maine, the search continued for an 18-year-old snowmobiler who disappeared shortly after the storm started Friday night, and a small plane crashed into a river channel there Monday after reporting ice buildup on the wings.
The weather caused hundreds of school closings and delays in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the North Carolina mountains.
Homeless shelters, especially in the Southeast, braced for a crush of people and said they would not turn anyone away.
In Florida, farmers prepared for a long week trying to protect their crops. In Polk County — between Tampa and Orlando — temperatures were in the high 20s and strawberry farmers turned on sprinklers to create an insulation of ice for the berries.
"The problem now is that we have a weeklong freeze predicted," said Ted Campbell, executive director for the Florida Strawberry Growers Association. "It's an endurance test."
Parts of central Florida could see lows below freezing nearly every day this week. Even Key West isn't immune. Temperatures there the next couple of days are expected to barely creep above 60 degrees with a stiff north wind — nowhere near average highs in the 70s that draw winter tourists.
The duration of the cold snap is unusual, especially in the South, where the weather is typically chilly for just a day or two before temperatures rebound into the 50s.
Instead, places like Birmingham, Ala., and Charlotte, N.C., will see temperatures above freezing for just a couple of hours a day all week long. Many Southern homes aren't built to handle that type of cold, with uninsulated pipes and heat pumps that will have to run all the time just to keep things barely comfortable.
The phones were already ringing off the hook Monday at an agency in Greenville, S.C., that uses federal grants to help people with their heating bills.
"I'm very worried, especially for those who are not accustomed to seeking assistance," said program coordinator Betty Cox.
Firefighters are also bracing for more calls this week. Five people died in a fire Friday in rural Plymouth, Mo., likely caused by an unattended fireplace, while three people were killed Saturday in Honea Path, S.C., when either a space heater or a stove started a fire in a mobile home.
"This could be a busy week — actually a couple of busy weeks," said David Berry, a volunteer fire chief in Alabama. "It's cold and folks are trying to do whatever it takes to stay warm."

Does anyone else find some divine irony in the fact that its been freezing cold ever since the Copenhagen meeting? Its 20 degrees below what it normally is at this time of year where I live. Where are those ice age hippie protesters from the '70s? We could use a few about now.

I hate to break your bubble but global warming is something we will never reverse. There are many things that we can do to stop it like clean fuels but they just aren't as cheap as the dirty fuels.

I agree with you about global warming but we aren't going to stop anytime soon...

In Holland it's also freezing (minus 10 degrees celsius) and last week there lay a 30cm pack of snow. But besides the cold we have also experienced very early summers (in 2007 as early as April!) and warm winters (2007, 2008) and rainy summers (like the one of 2006); it's quite clear nature's a bit, well, confused. And that problem has its roots within the climatechange problem. I'm dissapointed with the results of the Copenhagen meeting; no concessions done, no clear plan for 2020. The sudden temperature drop is ironic, but not that strange.

I like the idea of a petition; but I doubt the fact that many TWC'ers will sign it, however, I will.

I think Man Made Climate Change is the problem rather than the somewhat misleading term Global Warming.

You think it's BS? Let me tell you, it absolutely aint... It's true that our climate changes overtime (I mean every 10.000-15.000 years) and that there's more in CO2 in the sky then, but the last 25 years man has added huge amounts of CO2 to the natural cyclus; and as we're only halfway a natural peak that can't be good, dont you think?

You should know that snow in December in Holland has been really uncommon the last 25 years.. We had a frickin' white Christmas; THE FIRST ONE IN 31 YEARS!

    Pretty much.

Dynamic system + E => increased amplitudes in cyclical systems such as T. Hotter hots, colder colds and all that. Folks mentioning "irony" in the same sentence as a random "cold weather" annecdote, in reference to "global warming", are only promoting their peculiarly ignorant take on science.

Try debating the most responsible mechanism for recent climate change, at least there you've got substantial material.

The theory that the CO2 produced by the humans has a (worrying) big impact on the climate is fragile at best. Especcialy with all the other (newer) theories around.
And I shall admit that I am not an expert or very interested in the subject but I'm not believing all the hippies on their words.

And it is BS that my countries is going to flood with a 5cm raise.

Well dude, it's mine also.. You talk about 'new theories' please get something to support your argument with. I am not a Hippie, I just believe in science, that's all.

I am not a researcher, so I can't judge which study is the correct one ofcourse. I just don't want to be prejudiced-biased, like most people are.

I believe this is an extension of the Gore Effect, now that politicians are talking Global Warming too. It doesn't REALLY disprove global warming, but it is always hilarious to have increda-cold weather after someone goes on a rant about how humans are making the earth too hot (I remember a protest against global warming in Montreal that was cancelled due to a snowstorm)

There are billions of humans that pollute every single day in some manner, even if minutely. How can that not have gradual, adverse effects?

To think that humans have absolutely no effect, in my opinion, is very misguided.

Global warming may be fragile - and climate change will affect separate regions differently - but climate change is real, whether we indirectly affect it or not.

    My take on it.

Indeed. and the co2 that comes of from one single volcano blast is the amount that we humans have given off in just over a few centuries, we humans could never hurt the earth as much as nature does, oh and look the earth has survived for billions of years with this nature.

You're right, let's not bother our narcissistic selves with worrying about humanity's possible effects. Pollute all you want, make it fun! Don't even worry about consequences just do your thing man. Billions of us daily for centuries can't have that much effect anyway, right? We're already doing a good job saving some trees and what not, that's enough.

And for the record Martin, when nature cannot sustain us anymore it will destroy us one way or another. Either that or we destroy ourselves first.
