Default A question about older TW games

Just as the title states. I bought M2:TW and R:TW over the weekend and they run just fine, but since I'm getting so heavily into this series *thanks to E:TW *, then my question is how hard is it to get S:TW and M:TW to run on the newer OS's?

My system specs are as follows:

    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX 1024 MB DDR
    Intel i7 @3.00Ghz
    Corsair DDR3 @ 6GB RAM
Creative Labs Sound Audigy Platinum 2

Those are the basics, if you need a more detailed layout I can give it. I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me from that list. Thanks in advance!

Interesting question. I haven`t tried installing STW or MTW on my Win 7 either. I think you`ll be fine with Win 7 32 bit, but 64 bit may or may not cause a problem. If it worked on Vista then you should be fine with Win 7.

Only way to know for sure is to try yourself.

"Only way to know for sure is to try yourself." That's all well and good, but I'd rather find out from another person's experience before I fork over my money for 2 games..wether they are inexpensive or not, money is money.

Thank you everyone for all the information, and yes I'm aware that Win7 has a compatability mode, but to be frank...it's worthless

    Hello guys,

Bahamet, nobody can chew your meatballs for you, you must do that yourself. As in; there is no way we others can tell and know what you like in a game. You can however be pretty certain that the two first TW-games will offer a very diffrent game-experience compared with newer TW-titles. Personally (right or wrong), I feel that STW and MTW is more about battles and tactics, while RTW and later is primarily about strategy and additional details about that. That are diffrent things and it offers diffrent experiences in the games. Then there is the popular GFX-aspect of it - newer games got prettier GFX as so many are fond of pointing out. I "think" (but do not claim) that most people that has actually tried all TW-games will agree that the AI is better and smoother in STW and MTW, while RTW and later offers more strategic parameters and depth - to the player at least. More things to worry about basically. That's one bit...

The other bit is that you got an 9800 Nvidia-card which probably means you can kiss dear 'ol MTW goodbye as a functioning game. You need an ATI HD4800-something to run it (I got a HD4890-card on XP 32bit-drives that works at least. If it is strictly new hardwere that counts here). The GFX-card problem is probably your biggest obstacle to get MTW (and possibly STW) to run. That is how I understand it. I dont have W7, so I can hardly tell about any such stuff.

Hope that made you any wiser here...

    - Cheers

MTW 2 doesn't utilise multiple processors: so it could be slower than ETW despite being older.

    They should both run fine.

I have a Win7 64bit, and ETW works fine. The rest of my comp is in my sig. Also, Win7 has a mode called "Windows XP" mode that lets you use older programs. look it up online. Shogun and MTW should work on that perfectly

EDIT: Here is a article about it: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10229125-56.html

you should be fine. with some older programs the makers used certain functions that were not used later on. you can fix that through compatibility mode settings. most old programs will run on newer machines.

It's not the OS. I think STW & MTW have problem running with Nvidia 8+++ series and above IIRC.

Unfortunately, LestaT is all too correct: STW and (especially!) MTW have major problems running on newer video cards, particularly any Nvidia from the 8xxx series (or newer). There are some fixes/workarounds for this issue, but there's no way to guarantee ahead of time whether or not they'll work for your particular machine.

People with ATI cards seem to have far fewer problems, and can generally get STW/MTW to run on their PC with little difficulty.
