I suggest reading Isaac Asimov's (the historian, not the science fiction author) The Roman Republic, if you can find it. (It's rather hard to find).
Once you know a bit more, look up and read Plutarch's Lives or Suetonius' Twelve Caesars. They're both very good reads, if you can get through the often dense language of two thousand year old men.
Well I know of a Roman encyclopedia, which is visually stunning containing thousands of photographs of ruins throughout the Roman Empire, my favorite are personally Pompeii due to the condition it was preserved in and the . If you're looking for detail information about it's architecture and culture than try it out, if you are looking for military information than I suggest reading books by good ol' Caesar himself.
