Can someone please give me a description of what RTR does and changes. (Searched the Forum and didn't find what I was looking for)
It's a complete conversion for RTW-(BI).
At the moment, we can offer you a ful-ful conversion, RTR-Platinum edition, and some newer and smaller campaigns that are grouped together in the new VII releases.
Platinum (use mod-switch!) makes RTW more realistic, with new units, factions, an extended map towards India, and many more gameplay-improvements.
[ BTW mod-switch means that you can play it together with other mod-switch mods in one game-folder]
Then we have our newest (and best) release untill now: RTR VII Fate of Empires. This is a campaign that focusses at the western mediteranian, with lots of new game concepts and a great new RTW experience. Due to the smaller geographic area the actual regions are much larger. For instance sicily would equal RTW iberia. I'd recommend you to try this one, for it is the latest and best release until now.
So, I hope to have it made a little clearer for you, enjoy playing!![]()

Here's an overview of RTR Gold from Rometotalrealism.org RTR Gold is basically the same as RTR Platinum but with a few minor changes/fixes.
Mod Features
- Seventeen fully playable factions
- Two hundred new historically accurate army units
- Totally revamped combat stastics system
- New "Area of Recruitment" gameplay mechanic
- Comprehensive graphical overhaul of the front end
- Introduction video, faction elimination videos
- Redesigned campaign map
- Classical soundtrack conceived by a professional composer.
- Many new custom battle locations
- Additional historical battles
- Authentic battle formations and army deployments
- Enhancements enabling the AI to fight "smarter"
- Gloss textures enabling environmental reflections
The timing and rhythm of combat is the thing about RTR mods that keeps me with them instead of some others that I've tried. I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, but the battles tend to work in the way that I expect them to work historically, as well as being manageable in gameplay terms.
I DL'd RTR VII FOE and was blown away by the models of units and in my first battle, (SPQR Campaign against Epirus) I was utterly destroyed. I only killed 300 or so men and lost over 1500, but now that I know that I can fight like real generals of the time I (Might) Win . In my second battle I seiged an Epirus city and lost because of the time limit. If I had about 15min more I probably would've won.
You're supposed to lose the first battle - don't worry too much about it.
The first battle is there to offer a serious challenge to an experienced player. It's possible to win, but the victory won't be easy.

Isn't it so that you won't be able to set up your economy if you can't get rid of that army? (it happened to me)![]()
