    Default Protests against the Vancouver 2010 olympics (torchbearer knocked down)

    Didn't see a thread about this but figured we had one for China I suppose one should be made for this.

    http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/...ress&type=lgns

    I know Canada (my homeland by the way) had issues but didn't really expect the protests to be this hardcore to the point of attacking the bearers or blocking the routes

    Though I suppose this brings to light the issue of the treatment of aboriginals in Canada. Though how much I'm not sure.

    On a happier note

    I doubt attention "whores" would go out of their way to get arrested. From my understanding the Olympics has caused the BC government to make some poor decisions with its homeless in order to "clean" the city. I'm sure there is many different organizations protesting the Olympics but this is one of the reasons I find most important behind the resistance.

    this aint the first time tho-in fact it seems to be the norm;
    why, when sydney had the olympics, the gov. gave all the hobos and bums a bus ticket to...wherever

    @thanatos
    sorry, still hungover; i dont really wish grievous bodily harm

    Well when the Governor of Canada came to visit a few years back the BC government was critized for the way it handled the homeless people prior to her visit. I believe it was quoted that "When someone comes to your home, you should always tidy up the place beforehand" Not exact words of course.

    So I don't think that's the major issue but the First Nations are the ones garnering the most attention. However, this isn't the right way and it's not going to achieve anything aside from the "15 seconds" of fame.

    I'm trying to remember though if these protests were held before as this is the first time I've heard it in Canada or did they start with the Beijing Olympics?

    olympics have always been political; even when the sydney olympics happened, the aboriginals were raising a stink and it was a great way to alienate the public from their causes

    Oh, so Canada is doing what New York did (making homeless people disappear)? And that is a good reason to attack the torchbearer? Just protest against the Vancouver major.

    indeed
    the similarities between now and last yr are striking;
    of course, since canada is an anglo country and supposedly a democracy, that means treatment of aboriginals can be swept underneath the radar.

    but that aside
    i rekon these injuns and all aboriginals in particular shouldnt be trying to spoil canada's moment in the sun;
    it's a great way to lose respect and support
    especially more so if other countries want to engage in a circle jerk and preach to canada about human rights

    Funny that they would only start doing this in full force when the torch was being led through Vancouver.

    Exarch's claim that they nothing but people looking for attention is quite apropos.

    "woo woo"? Why not just ask "dot or feather"?

    And shouldn't it be conquered, not stolen lands?

    If we are talking like Yosemite Sam - sure.

    At any rate are Olympic events going to be held on "stolen" lands?

    "It is unfortunate that this torchbearer's once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Olympic flame was disrupted in this manner," Jim Richards, director of torch relays, said in a release.

    This part is so true.

    The torch relay is just a stupid Nazi ritual.
    I find it quite pathetic that people want to partake in it in the first place.

    I don't agree with the reason for the protest, but I can't say I condemn any of these actions. The Olympics are a joke, IMO.

    Why not? The "Indian Reserves" are a disgrace.

    Then they should stop living on reserves and become part of the civilized world.
