I have bought The Hobbit a few days ago and I am half way through and it is definitely not as good as The return of the king. So I am wondering whether to return The Hobbit for The Similarilion or however it's spelt.![]()

The Silmarillion is definitely better as far as I'm concerned, primarily because . Look at it this way, if you're looking for a dramatic novel, read the Hobbit, if you want to learn more about Middle-earth and the nature of Tolkien's universe, read the Silmarillion.
Ultimately I would read both though, as both are good in their own right. So, would I return the Hobbit? No. Read both it's worth it.
Well the Hobbit was designed as sort of a child book so I would prefer the Silmarillion.
Yeah after reading the return of the king and then reading the hobbit after, I was like, "well, this is definitely written for kids"..
I think I might just trade it in for the Silmarilion

Though be aware that the Silmarillion is not finished and is more written like an histroy book but if thats your thing then I would certainly buy it. Also the Children of Hurin is a book I would recommend if you love epic stories(In a certain way I liked Children of Hurin better then the LOTR series)
the Hobbit is much better if you prefer a linear story. I always found the Silmarilion to be interesting, but rather chaotic.
Mmm, well im up to page 183 so far.. and im on holidays in another city, and I have a three day trip back in a car, so I will probably read the Silmarillion

I loved the Hobbit as a child and i still love it, but perhaps it is different if you know it from childhood on... still I would finish it, the best part is yet to come. The Silmarillion is very interisting but not a strictly structured story, more like an accumulation of stories and historical parts forming the history of Middle-Earth.
I've read the Hobbit when I was about 11 annd I really loved it. As some said before if you like a book which focuses on one story you will have more fun with the hobbit, but if you're just want to öearn more about Tolkien's world the Silmarillion is the best choice. But wait until you've finished the Hobbit, the best part is yet to come.

Yeah... the best part =)
The hobbit is funny too! lol
Its easy to make war with others, its never been easy when we need a peace.
My holy damn simple tactic; Strike First, Strike HARD and SHOW NO MERCY.
Mmm, well I read the appendicies at the end of the return of the king, and that gave me a small taste of the Silmarillion
