startup problem on new laptop

Hi there, with today being christmas, i got the new laptop that i wanted, which i was told is a decent one for gaming purposes. i was told my the man in the shop that medieval 2 will play on this laptop, so i installed it this morning looking forward to playing it. however after installing it, i never even got any further than that without encountering problems. When i put the disk in and click 'Play Medieval II Total War' I get the following message:
Medieval 2 total war has stopped working. a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.
i really hope there is a solution to this problem, so here is my system spec from DXDIAG:

I think I know what the problem is.

It is not your laptop. When you finally get it installed it will be beautiful.

Your problem is your dvd-ram. It is an ATA and there have already in the last 7-8 months in this forum with compatibilty issues with these ols dvds and the ATA drivers compatibility with the old IDE formant.

Contact HP online. It's their machine. You go down through teir driver downloads, you may find one. All else fails, leave a service ticket. It's under warranty.

oh good. im glad that it isnt a problem with my machine.

so is there any chance you can tell me the name of what i need to download? because i went on the HP site and i dont really know what it is im looking for lol

My problem has the same outcome (have installed Medieval 2 - Total War Gold edition, when I start the game I get a black screen with the clepsidra for 5 sec, then program closes). I updated my windows XP to pack 3, installed Net Framework 3.0, but no change.

Exactly what model is it? It's kicking me out just saying dv6 and it does not search the dvd-rom number.

Unfortunately I don't see a driver for it. Just to be on the safe side do you have another computer you can try to install it on? I want to make sure it it is not a bad disc.

With your computer having Vista SP1 and there is a SP2, you may have some work ahead of you. Your copy of vista has to be activated by you before the good updates happen.

With that same thought, all of HP's drivers are 2009. I maybe a good idea to install those also. There maybe a fix in there I don't see.

okay,

i am sorry, but i am a real noob at this sort of stuff,, so what is it that i have to do next in order to maybe get this game running, if that is at all possible? also, i really wanted to buy empire total war; will that have the same problem? because i really wanted to get that game..

oh and M2 TW is my friends disk and he used it for about 6 month with no problem

One person said log in as administrator, disable the UAC, reboot, then try it. Vista maybe the enemy.

I have played Medieval 2 - total War on the same laptop, as well as Kingdoms and many .. many mods, all of it about 1 year ago. Since then I have formated the HD and reinstalled Windows XP.

No reason you can't, again, then.

Did you cactivate XP after installing it?
Did you run Windows Update when you installed XP? Did you run the option installs?
After you you installed XP, did you go back to Dell's website and install the drivers from them, again?
Are you now running Internet Explorer 7 or 8?

i have tried disabling the UAC and restarting. still no luck. i have also made sure that i have all updates for my laptop. i still do not know what the problem is or how to solve it. my laptop spec is good enough to play the game, i just dont understand why it wont.

Try to copy the whole discs into a temp folder and run it from there. It has worked for some. Also run the setup.exe for each one instead of the autorun feature. It has been known to hang.

The game needs directx 9.0c. With directx10 already installed with Vista, it looks like Medieval2 did not install it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en is the link to it. Leave the UAC disabled and it will install.

Did you install IE8 in the process?

i downloaded that directx file you sent me in the link, and the game now works fine!

the graphics are awesome and everything is great now
