Heheh yeah, it has gotten worse now. If it wasn't up to me, there would have been just one cardinal. Currently there are 2 of mine, so a total of 3. I win by votes
edit: to clarify, the genoese cardinal you see is currently the pope and Niccolo and Pius have died. Only Mirogod with his scary face is still in it from that picture...
The current pope is from my nation too. I really like Genoa. It's certainly the most fun faction to play with up till now. Seriously! Don't know why.

Well, back in those days, where being cardinal was politics, nieceties like the whole celibacy thing were ignored if you were powerful enough. So given the game's historical context, I dibs one of those positions!

Currently the 2nd Genoese pope is in place, the polish cardinal died a turn before it. The pope now is 58. He will die soon and then Frolio (Frodo?) will take the power. What happens after?

Why don't take advantage of this? Start spamming priests! Preferable from the same settlement, and one with a Theology guild. Once you get one of them upgraded to Head Quarters, pretty much any priest recruited there will have enough piety to be a Cardinal. Keep recruiting them, and dominate the College of Cardinals, and ensure you've always got a national pope.
That'll be a nice advantage against fellow catholic enemies!
