Fort Garrison disapears question

I don't know enough of the basic game maybe, but twice now my fort had a garrison under siege in 6.1 and then after a few turns my garrison just vanished. The second time I had a general in it and I got the end of turn announcements and he was dead. Is this like a surrender? I thought that there might be a surrender or sally now kind of option, but i could be wrong. I hardly ever remain besieged before the AI attacks so this twice happening surprised me. I did not know if it was a fort thing. Anyone know?

Well, if the siege goes on long enough the garrison will die and the settlement will be lost (it should say how many turns remaining before surrender). This simulates the people inside running out of supplies and surrendering or something to that effect. You probably know this though, so if you are talking about some sort of bug where your garrison just disappears before it ought to, then I'm not sure what to say, other than that I have never had it happen to me.

They might also have starved. The garrison disappears (and characters, too) and the enemy moves in. Otherwise it would give very uncomfortable situations. Imagine: after six years of sieging you finally breach their walls. The scout sent in returns and says:
"Sir, there's no one in there. They have been dead for ages."
