lower relations with the faction, and weaken your borders with the faction (keep armies out of border territories, low garrisons).

It also helps when the faction your luring has a poor rep and is of a different religion (though sometimes it doesnt matter)

Attacking doesn't lower reputation. Being at war does, but you can be at war with two factions as long as you have an ally. Sacking, exterminating and executing does lower reputation, but occupying and releasing increases it.

Leaving some ports unguarded will usually do the trick as well. I've had Norwegian fleets sail all the way to Crete just to blockade me.

Or get yourself excommunicated. (by attacking the Pope) He'll surely be friendly enough to call a crusade on you. In no-time, all catholics will be knocking at your gates, if they're your neighbours you'll be in serious trouble (no really, you will be)

That's what I do. I'm playing as Norway (Early Era, 6.1, VH/M), and wanted to keep Denmark off my back while doing a rebel territory grab. So I allied with them, and also with HRE. When they go to war, which they will (Denmark has Hamburg), I will use the excuse to break our alliance. I know I still get a rep hit (not as much as an unexplained alliance break), but as long as you obey the Pope when he sticks his nose into your attempts at conquest, you should be fine, particularly if you have a higher Papal rating than your opponent, because then he may get excommunicated, then it's game over for him as you declare a crusade. Anyway IMO, rep isn't important, so long as you have a high strength diplomat. He can make your enemies agree to ridiculous terms!

I can't argue against that, it true. I probably misunderstood your first post.

No, they won't take your lands but return home after someone took the settlement. I like to fight to the death (preferably their, but most of time mine) and then return immediately, before they can do anything with their new conquest. It's hard, it can be impossible, but if you have annihilated about 4-5 catholics it becomes easier. But on the other hand: destroying 5 catholic factions without getting a crusade called against you...

Ppl ppl. He wanted to conquer Christendom witthout lowering his rep (though this is hard when you get the Pope meddling with the affairs of a King). Attacking the Papacy and/or getting excommunicated makes rep go down the toilet. As already said play on VH or Hard and keep your Garrisons low at the city/castle you want to be attacked at. Just make sure when you retaliate you fight in you own borders and never retaliate by invading the enemy or fighting on their borders. At times the Pope will tell you to stop fighting in which case simply defend your settlements after they are besieged and as it says stop fighting as the Papacy will make things hard for you if you ignore its wishes.

Example, as England I always allow the Scots to attack me at York early, as they tend to be my next target (after I conquer all the rebel bases on the isles), by keeping a low garrison at York they always attack. I retaliate but only to defend York and alway keep the battles within my territory during subsequent attacks by the Scots. As long as you didn't start the war and you keep it within your territory you dont get a rep hit (there are exceptions to this). Now over the turns watch the reputation of the Scots once they hit poor you can attack them and you wont take a rep hit. The tricky part also is that your reputation depends on the stats of your King/faction leader. If he is Chivalrous then you get a bonus in reputation every turn if he has the Dred stat you get a penalty to rep every turn. This is why never execute prisoners with the branch of your family entitled to the throne (instead always release prisoners to build up your chivalry). Use another branch of your royal family to do your dirty work for you if you enjoy executing folk and/or annihilating settlements. Also attacking Allies will make your rep go down the toilet so dont form alliances with factions that you intend to invade in the not too distant future. With all said, remebmer this is "Total War" so eventually you will get excommunicated in order to achieve your goals; that is uless you intend to live like a Carebear in your little corner of the world.

I think you messed up the difference between Papal Favor and Reputation. Papal Favor goes down when you attack non-excommunicated catholics (not just being at war, army vs army or fleet vs fleet) and Reputation goes down for being at war. Sacking, Exerminating and Excecuting lower it too.

Hard to mess up the difference when i wasn't comparing the two; just stating the obvious relationship. Keep in mind if you do get excommunicated your relationship with your allies will plummet which increases the chances of WAR/broken alliances this can have a negative effect on a factions reputation. To add, also be careful when forming Alliances in general. Too many Alliances can have a negative effect to your reputation also, this is because when two of your Allies go to war with one another you are forced to choose between the two; and as already said breaking an alliance has in general a negative effect to your reputation. As England I generally form Alliance with France and the Papacy and the rest I form trade agreements only and if I see relationship worsening I give generous donations. With that said, basically, you want to attack factions with a poor reputation and avoid conflict with factions that are loved; with a Chivalrous leader you can preserve your rep. in this way . Alternatively, you can just wage total war and exterminate anyone and all that stand is your way but expect your reputation to go down the toilet and an excommunication coming your way. What ever path once chooses is up to him/her.

I have never lost a city to a crusade. holding the brigdes and destroying their armies 1 by 1 and if you got a good enough general you can keep them at bay with peasants

If you let them come to the settlement, it is a much greater challange. Not to mention hardly possible if you are defending against hordes of heavy-armoured-knights whilst playing Egypt or the Moors.

Check diplo screen and ally with factions they are at war with.

March your armies back and forth in regions they own to lower your relations with them (I don't think this hurts your reputation but it will quickly destroy your relations with the faction whose land your marching in). Make lots of short marches, I believe each separate march can lower relations, as opposed to a long move with an army.

Bait them. As mentioned above, leave weak garrisons in border provinces. Also, send very weak units, alone, into their territory.

If you try, and fail, in an assassination attempt, they will almost certainly declare war on you. I'm not sure the effect this has on your reputation for the assassination attempt, but the declaration of war will be made by the AI faction.

Contrary to what has been said above, I've always thought that declarations of war DO lower your reputation. Certainly if you're DOW is vs an ally it takes a big hit to reputation, but even vs a neutral I've thought it was a hit as well. Haven't scanned the AI files myself though, so I'm not sure.

    Reputation is NOT lowered by:
    Assassination attempts (even failed ones)
Declaring war on a faction (only when the target is your ally)
    Marching through territories

Being at war DOES lower your reputation.
