help on what to download first!

3.4 then 3.5.3 should do the trick, aye.

Make sure you run the 'campaign_map_reset' before you play it though!

I have a similar question - I HAVE WINDOWS7!!!!!

I installed 3.4 and it worked perfectly with that; than I installed the 3.5 patch(extracted) and have the following setup:

Rome-Total War (patched up to 1.6) --- Bi, Data, Docs, ExRM, etc.
Under ExRM --- Custom, Data, Docs, Preference, Shortcut to Rome-TW.exe
I ran the map-reset.

When I click on "Start Game" after setting Faction and Option, I get a black box and a window message that window encountered a problem and has to close.

The patch must have changed something that causes Windows to close - my question for the "creators" - what could it be?

Observation: All my files are on "read-only".

Any help is greatly appreciated, since so far I can play only with version 3.4.

'campaign_map_reset' <----whats that?

As the name implies, it resets the map. The game remembers the settings from the last session, I believe. If this happened to be a different mod then loading this one up and playing would cause a CTD because the map is a bit different. Resetting the map, therefore, means there is no "last" session, and hence can't remember a previous map, thus no CTD.

You should see it in the ExRM folder yes. It's an MS-DOS batch file, all you do it double click it and it sorts itself out.

Your "Rome - Total War" folder

Mine reads like this:
D:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War

That should put an "ExRM" folder there. When it comes to putting 3.5.3 on, extract it someplace else and then replace the relevant folders in the "ExRM" folder. If you see an ExRM folder in the 3.5.3 download, then replace the ExRM folder that you've just installed, say "yes to all" when prompted to replace any files.

(argh! been taking me ages to write stuff today, my fingers don't want to work anymore and I have to keep going back and changing everything - this is what you get for going through the EDU in its entirety!

It's just occured to me. When it comes to putting 3.5.3 on you might have to replace the folders/files inside the ExRM folder rather than the ExRM folder itself. So rather than copying the 3.5.3 ExRM folder, you copy everything inside that folder, and paste them inside the existing 3.4 folder.
