There's should be another way. AI units gain experience fast. Beside when I press the "automatic fight button" my units gaing more experience and faster than when I fight my own battles. So I think if I place the unit close to the general maybe gain experience faster or some like that...
    Thanks for replay.

I have same problem, sometimes i kill with my cavalry 1600 enemies, but no experience.
I think it can be change in data files.

I have this theory that every man in the cohort must kill atleast 1 dude to advance to the next chevron. Although im not quite sure but i do know that small groups of cohorts can gain experience alot faster that cohorts with large numbers, but i digress.

Sometime they get a chevron when they had been kill almost all and left at least 10-15 man on the unit. But I don't take that chance to let my unit be eliminated. That's a nice theory Xellos_Moon, but how can I do that? And what do you think about place the general close to the unit in the battle?

Try to go into battle with an understrength cohort with 50-60 men or something. To keep them from dying hold them behind your front line as reserves and when the enemy routs have them chase the routers. That's why its so easy to get chevrons with cavalry.

About the general thinggy, no i dont believe it. Sounds like a long shot. If i was a soldier i dont think id gain experience with the general near me. Although it might be possible if his wisdom would rub off of me or something but again, i digress.

Edit: About your first post when you said that the AI gains experience rapidly, i think its their temples and stuff. I do also believe that your units gain more chevrons when you auto caltulate the battle which i think sums up the AI gaining alot of chevrons because their battles are always auto calculated.

This happens because when you auto calculate alot of your units die which leads me to my original theory that cohorts with fewer men gain more chevrons. Try it

You get a problem with that though. It's not straight-up the number of kills per unit, iirc if you kill routers it only gives you a fraction of the experience points. Observe that a light cav that killed thousands of routers might gain just one chevron (or none) whereas a heavy inf that slugged it out gets more.
