    Default Phalanx = overpowered?

    one short example:

i managed it to charge the standard greece hoplites with my princeps unit before the hoplites were able to form a phalanx, many of my troops already reached them and started to fight but then the hoplites formed the phalanx formation and slaughtered my own troops within seconds.

how can it be that they are still able to form a phalanx if there are already enemy troops among them and how can it be that they can kill them within seconds with that crippled phalanx formation?

    one more thing:

the hoplites were moving in the standard formation (spears up) when i charged then, they started to for the phalanx 3 to 5 seconds after my changing troops reached them.

Its because hoplites do not have a phalanx mode in extended greek mod as in rtw vanilla rather the overhand spear thing is just the animation, hoplites are powerful but so are romans if you use them properly.

The RTW representation of a phalanx is unrealistically easy to use, but that sort of behavior is hard coded so there isn't much that can be done to fix it.

Do you think decreasing it's stats would change anything?

Lowering stats would make them weaker, but not in the right way. The problem is not that they are too strong in phalanx mode or non-phalanx mode. The problem is that they can switch to phalanx mode even when they are already engaged in melee. Ideally they should be stuck in non-phalanx mode until they disengage and re-organise.

If I could re-write the code for phalanx mode I would also make it so that individual soldiers could not switch back to pikes after switching to swords.

Then the phalanx would almost always be swords wouldn't it?
