    Default Recommend me a Mod...

    Hey there,

I've come back to RTW after an all too long departure. Basically, I'm aware that RTW has LOTS of mods and I just don't know where to start! I re-bought RTW through Steam so any mods would need to work with the latest version.

Can anyone recommend me a good mod? Total conversion or otherwise I just want something fun and different to get my attention.

If this is the wrong place, please move it.

    Regards,
    The Gallant Forty-Twa

EB, RTR, and RS are some popular total conversions, phenominal mods both of them. Vastly expanded realism, strategy, and roleplay potential. EB I would say is the greatest departure from vanilla, with RTR being closer and RS being closer still. I would try all three.

If you're into fantasy and have BI, you might try Fourth Age: Total War.

Or, for something entirely different, you might try Napoleon: Total War. (The mod, not the upcoming game.)

And that's just the tip of the iceberg, as you know. There are some Dark Age mods that basically cover the period of BI to a greater extent, there are some great Medieval mods.

There are mods that focus on expanding and deepening a certain faction, such as the Extended Greek Mod.

And, there are also mods that keep the vanilla style, but make some tweeks for greater playability.

Vast resources all at your fingertips.

There's also mods like Blue Lotus and Mythology:Total War (the latter one isn't released yet, but soon enough ), that are based on mythology and have myth units like dragons, centaurs, minotaurs etc...

If you had the Alex add-on, you could go for Aristeia when it is released in the new year (aiming for 01/01/10)

I forgot there are also Chinese and Japanese mods, which I haven't tried but sound quite interesting, if you want a change of pace.

I like INVASIO BARBARORVM (IBFD) for BI as well as EB, in IBFD you have some 0 turn units you can recruit which isn't very realistic but really fun - now anyone can be a horde!

I agree, INVASIO BARBARORVM is a fantastic mod, and the graduation from the expansion pack. XGM (extended greek Mod) is good for getting a feel for Rome mods again, and I would recommend that also. Chivalry is also a complete new flavour for the game, set in the Early middle Ages and I am also into Rise of Persia right now and it is fantastic as well. If the mod uses a mod folder (creates a subfolder in the RomeTW exe directory) then you can install multiple mods at once and have them not interfere with each other, and still be able to play the Vanilla (origional GAme)

if you want to try Greek-centered Mods, see Sparta: Total War and The Greek Wars mods... there's also progressing mods like Hegemonia (which is progressing fast) and Hic Est Lacedaemon

Released mythology mods i recommend Amazon Total War, very well-made mod

Diadochi TW and XGM are good mods too
Now if you want a mod wich preserves the vanilla RTW feelling but enhances the gameplay, try Terrae Expuganandae

    My favourites are:

    300 Warlords of Sparta (ALEX)
An epic 2 faction mod: The Greek states, led by Sparta, battle Persia. It has two scripted battles (Thermopylae and Plataea) and scripted missions. It has two versions, "Classic" and a version based on the movie 300.

    Fourth Age: Total War (BI)
I presume you know about this, its being out a while. Still one of the bast around. Great models/skins and gameplay.

    Europa Barbarorum
Again, I presume you know about this. Heavily scripted, tough gameplay and dedication to realism make it a great mod for role-playing.

    The Crusades (BI)
An old mod but largely forgotten nowadays. Set during the Third Crusade, the mod focuses on the Holy Land. Some of the best models and skins going. If you play the 1.0 version (which I play) then its a 2 faction mod. Another modder has added more factions to the mod however. The forum is at .org. Warning: not modfoldered.

    Viking Invasion II (BI)
Based on the look and atmosphere of the original Viking Invasion Expansion for Medieval: Total War.

My favorite one is Europa Barbarorum, but less challenging (EB is extremely challenging, so no offense ) mods like Roma Surrectum are also among my favorites..
