Icon5 Favorite period in Roman History

Hey guys, so I had a question for all you historians and fans of Rome. Out of all the periods of time, and highlighted momments in roman history what was your favorite period in roman history? For me I would have to say either the collapse of carthage, the fall of Hannibal, the war in Gaul, or The period of time transfering power from Julius Caeser to Agustus.

I'm going to have to agree with Praefectus here. Most interesting times right there. 96-180, 235-284 AD

3rd and 2nd century BC were great as there was a power shift in italy and mediterranean as gallic invasions were thrawted, war of with Carthage and hannibal, the defeat of main greek alexander successor states, Rome's military and naval dominance of the seas truly begun.
Although the 1st century BC was excellent too with the power shift from the senate to the ambitious generals, spartacus revolt, the rise of caesar, civil wars and the beginning of the Empire.

    Truly hope CA make R2TW!!

The Late Republic. Tiberius Gracchus to Augustus taking power. 133 BC to 27BC. A time dominated by people who were Titans of history, and they were contemporaries.

The Republic... from the Punic Wars on, it was a place of heroes, of extraordinary deeds... of corruption and decadence, morality and briliance. I find the Fall most interesting because Cicero's nine hundred letters make it the best recorded time in all the history of the ancient world. Apart from that, the Romans' heroic victory over the Carthaginian Empire fascinates me, as do the times of the Marii and Gracchi. The Late Republic harbored some of the extraordinary people in history, and their characters echo through the politicans and events of today...

However, I would want to be alive during the time of one of the Five Good Emperors as a Senator, because I'd be rich enough to have a good quality of life, and the Emperor (especially Marcus Aurelius or Hadrian) would be more open to my suggestions and would be less likely to impale me on something or other. While Claudius arguably did the same thing as the Five Good Emperors, his reign had Caligula on one end and Nero on the other...

I would say the Republic following the Punic Wars as well. Though, for a smaller time period, I'd say from about 100 B.C. to about 14 A.D.
    Late Republic, very Early Empire.
Alea Iacta Est (The Die is Cast) - Gaius Julius Caesar

We will either find a way, or make one - Hannibal Barca

Say, the time period which Polybius covers in his Rise of the Roman Empire?

Late republic, crisis of the 3rd century, and five good emperors.

Caesar is probably my favorite roman, Augustus and Gaius Marius are up there on my top list too. I find Julian the Apostate very interesting too. CA should make a TW game about Caesar in the same way they are making one about Napoleon.

I would say the collapse of the Western Roman Empire is my favorite time period, if I had to just pick one.

Why would you choose that one? Not saying your choice is wrong but i'd like to give my opinion, that that event is the end of almost all that is good, the beginning of the dark ages, the times of hell on earth, all developement being destroyed. if this wasn't happend we could maybe be further developed. I don't want to say this would really be true, but just the fact that the collapse of the WRE means the end of a Golden Age for the strongly developed people.

I just think it was an extremely fascinating period, not a good period to live in

Constantine's reign to me has been fascinating, though i personally disagree with several of his choices i think its fair to say that without him both the east and the west would likely have crumbled. Plus, he made an awesome city named after himself.

Seriously though its a neat period, id say from the coronation of Constantine to the fall of the WRE for me.

I think you must learn to distinguish reality from fiction mate, the idea of the enlightened and marble covered classical age is a long lived myth. The reign of the Romans was a cruel and barbaric one: the idea of human rights was practically unexistant, people were made to kill eachother for entertainment as if they were some kind of animals without any value at all. The whole Roman economy was born on the backs of slaves, which made it unsustainable as it needed a constant flow of prisoners and a perpetual state of war to keep floating. Slave based economy also meant that there were practically no technological inventions made during the Roman era since slaves worked for free (compare the technological development of the North States and the South States before the American Civil War)

You also falsly believe in the myth of the "Dark Ages", in fact it was not a dark age, it was the dawn of a new era of freedom and new discoveries. MUCH MORE technological inventions were made during the "Dark Ages" as people were now interested in making life better and easier as one couldn't just order their slaves to do all hard and dangerous work. In the Dark Ages human life also started to have actual value, people were no longer killed in arenas for the pleasure of others.

To hell with Rome. I gotta say I also love the Spartacus period, a shame he didn't kill em all...

It is true that people often think antiquity as good era. It was cruel time but the Romans were not the only one. Germanic tribes plundered and killed and even Greeks or Carthaginians were not always humane. Your glorious Goths murdered people too.

After fall of western Roman Empire the scientific and technologic knowledge of the antiquity disappeared from Europe. Only after 1000 and 1100 AD the lost knowledge was recovered, partly from Arabs.

Things just were different back then. It is wrong to think that Rome was evil and glorious and honourable Germans destroyed it.
