    Default Random drops in revenue?

I am Breton, and one of my cities has slowly become a gigantic money-hole. Taxes are low or normal usually, but even at high it's in the bucket by several hundred per turn.

Leader has good influence and management, and the settlement's pretty built up. It's got a port and trades to other settlements. Right now it's at -1111 a turn! It's not supporting any troops, and the population is happy.

What on earth is going wrong?

your troops consume too much money I guess. i suggest you to disband most of your cav, they are the most expensive troops to maintain.

let me guess, it's a large/huge city and its by far the biggest city you have? also when you say "it's not supporting any troops" you mean there aren't any troops garrisoned in it, however it doesn't mean that it isn't paying for troops in your army. military expenses are divided among all your cities, the more population in a city the higher percentage of military upkeep that settlement pays. this is the reason why capital cities usually earn negative income despite being the most advanced, as the majority of the military upkeep burden is upon them. I assume this is what happens to you.

Ah I didn't know it was spread across the board. And yeah, it's my highest ranking city.

Does recruiting take from your population?

Yes it does. Hence the old days of slow growth, warbands and huge unit sizes tended to severely retard Gallic and Germanic economies, as their warband hordes kept getting slaughtered, and their settlements were emptied to feed the 120 man unit spam.

The Gallic spear warband spam has been ended, and I think Iberia is behaving now. Illyria is being removed, so don't worry about them. How's Germany doing, though? Is it spamming cheap units?

At the moment, it doesn't appear so. They tend to use those spearmen of theirs, with the throwing spears, which are vicious.

    They all have throwing spears?

I -never- fight germans in a pitched battle unless I have a serious cavalry advantage. I detest being on the receving end of those damned pointy sticks! Which usually means I avoid them altogether and never see what they're up to.

I meant their spearmen. They're pretty tough nuts sometimes. Also those warriors that start with C -- I see them fairly often in Germanic armies.

Except the berzerkers, they all have spears??

What colour are they? I'm trying to think which ones you are meaning. The basic one is a red/purpleish colour and a rectangular shield. I think they also have one which a green/brown colouration. You then have the heroes which are the bare chested ones and have face-paint I think. The final one are the berzerkers but they have the smallest unit size and typically use swords instead. You do have skirmishers and the like but I don't think you are meaning them.

You then have the two AOR/mercenary units. Finally there is the AOR unit with spear and bow for the modern day Poland area.

From the few times I have seen them, I think they are well behaved.

The ones that are literally called Germanic Spearmen. Red/purple I think.

Oh, don't worry about the different colors. They're in the same DMB slot, which is what we're short on. Having mercs look a little different is just a way to help you keep track of who's who in battles.
