Default Am I losing too many provinces?

Okay so I've played a few campaigns (not completing the, but restarting alot) on the 361 one. And in beginning I usually lose alot of provinces and ALOT of money, so that I have to pick my battles very carefully, and pretty much let some other cities go under siege by various barbarians. I lose alot of money too which makes it hard to replace losses in battles, espcially vs the franks and Laszges (sp?). If you can give me any advise it would be much apprecieated.

    Great mod btw!

Take heart my friend lol. I lost 10% of my land after to turns just watch each city when you start and DONT TRUST the feild armys of Gaul! For the love of Pete don't!!
Or the feild army in the east next to Antioch. Get rid of the genrals.
Don't worry if you hold fast you will gain it all back your sound like your doing the right thing.

Well It's not only losing provinces and money, now alot of my generals are rebelling on me, so I've lost two full stacked armies in 3 turns. This mod is the hardest i've played to date.

Hahaha, yeah, I really like it even though its reeeeeeeeeally hard. The number of units are awesome and just going around owning armies up with Julianus is great! Would be nice with some tips and advices for surviving though. This period of the Roman Empire is fascinating and this mod is just miles better than vanilla BI, keep up the good work!

You could play Constantius II in the 355AD campaign or Procopius.

BUT, if you really want to play the 361AD campaign, then it really is a long hard battle of attrition. This is where being strategic is just so important, using your limitanei troops to wear the enemy down and preserving your field armies. Going into deficit is designed to reflect the difficulty in recruiting fresh troops quickly which is why the first turn is so important in what troops to recruit and where. The Germanic tribes generally lack both horsemen and bowmen so I have found both equites sagitarii and equites scutarii are very effective in their skirmishing roles.

What I tend to do is to have skirmishing parties of say 6-10 units mainly equites but some foot archers and use these to skirmish in battle with germanic armies and then retreating before and melee results. This helps to wear down the enemy before taking them on with the field army.

Also, cash can be gained by sacking rebellious cities. Over time, as troops numbers dwindle and more provinces are retaken the cash flow gets better.

You can also use the Forced Diplomacy option as well, which gives you an advantage in dealing with other factions and forcing diplomacy on them.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your advice julianus, I've given you rep for it. I'm about to start a 4th campaign on the 361 campaign, and later I'm going to try 355 campaign. Let's see how this works out lol.

I'm in a similar situation here, as I this is my first time playing
this difficult of a mod in quite some time.
I'm about to go end my turn for the first time as the
    Western Roman Empire, under Julianus.

As it is, I'm about to suffer from most of my settlements
undergoing civil unrest, my economy is about to go deep red,
and I'm at war with almost every faction, even a few I can't see on the
    map yet.

I'm used to tough campaigns, like the Seleucid Empire in most pre-Roman Empire
mods(at war with every neighbor, low economy,) but not like this.

For the first few turns(which look to be critical in this mod):
    1. Where should I put my capital for corruption to be
    reduced the most?
    2. Who and where should I attack with my current armies,
if I attack anywhere? I am willing to move troops out of
forts if they are needed elsewhere.
    3. Who is it possible to make peace with(for now) at this point,
    if only for more trade?
    4. What areas should I be prepared to fight countless
battles to keep, if I want them? Also, what places should not be lost, besides
    the obviously vital ones?
    5. Which troops can I disband, if it can be done without losing every
chance at this campaign? If so, specify, and I will post the results.

    I appreciate any input.

The lazages should not be an issue as they were destroyed by Constantius II, so by 361AD I don't believe they would feature. I suspect that removing them from the mod would be a bit difficult though?
I've found playing Contantius II in 355AD very much to my liking, especially as I 'know' what the Sasanids did historically and I make sure all my eastern forces are holed up in the right cities!

Removing the Iazages from the 361 and 365AD campaigns is possible, though recruiting them as mercenaries and auxiliaries would still be available.

One option would be to extend the Quadi's and Goths' territory into where the Iazages were. I could also bring in the Burgundians so they lie between the Alemanni and Quadi.

    Any thoughts??

I think what you are suggesting would about do it. Valentinian had quite a bit of trouble with the Burgundians, Allemanni and Quadi, the Quadi having moved into the territory that the Iazages had controlled prior to Constantius II destroying them.

In favor of getting rid of them.
