    Default Diplomatic AI and alliances

i've been playing 3 seperate campaigns, with only 1 of them using the DLV faction relations (ireland), the other 2 are using the neutral-make-your-own-relations beginning (norway and teutons). What i've noticed is that .... i cant make any true alliances. Just about every alliance i get with a faction at my borders has always betrayed me, even scotland (When i was ireland). I feel like i'm playing pre patch 1.2 M2TW here. Is anyone else having this problem? Anyone have any tips on how to actually make a good ally?

EDIT: also something completely unrelated to the topic. But how do you remove the graphic boundary? I remember hearing you can get rid of it, so you can have as many troops on one battle field at the same time, even if the game thinks it will crash your system.

Did you choose the "TOTAL War" option too ? (the one which says that the other factions will particularly be focused on you)
If yes, then your allies even with the standard factions settings, will always betray you and try to destroy you if they see in you any weakness.

err no i forgot to mention this, i chose the DLV Civ option for all 3 campaigns, so i wouldnt have these kinds of betrayals.

And thanks taiji ... although when i went to look at it, it showed up as 1 .... Which is odd since i've had battles where reinforcements wouldnt show due to my hardware being to low end (which i dont get, i have 4 gb RAM, 2.4 ghz quad core, and a 260 GTX OC GPU). DLV is the only mod i get any sort of lag in for some reason.

Open medieval2.preference.cfg and change this setting from 0 to 1:

    [game]
    ....
    unlimited_men_on_battlefield = 1

That is weird, my allies are always fidel (but still i always let some strong garrisons nearby). The only thing that made my allies untruthsworthy was during the dark ages. Maybe you reached the dark ages ?

It all comes down to your reputation, which include; (aggresive) expansonism; assassinations; trsspasing without access; activly waging war without the concent of the majority (crusade) of your easy going factions, granting trade right or other diplomatic grants to your friends enemys, etc.

    Therefor:
There is little use of expanding around easy going factions's "backyard", I prefere rebel regions abit further away. Bribe the pope to get the majority on your side, but don't push the envelope.
Mass assassinations of other easy going factions will give your leader dread and you become unpopulare.
Never tresspass on friendly regions without access. You heard me, never.
Don't charge any faction out there, specially the populare factions (the pope factions, reliable factions, the same religion, your allys and easy going factions) You can however let them come to you, bite you till they get on the bad side of the pope -- then lunch a crusade.
Never use any diplomatic engine with enemys. Including: christian - muslim, any religion - pagan, unpopulare factions, etc. No 'Trade rights', 'map information', give/take, no missions with them -- nothing. However, use the diplomatic engine ALOT with your allys and enemys of your enemy (which are aso liked by the majority. Activly give away regions and spare money to keep their relations above 'Good'.

    Did you get that?

PS: Easy going faction: Lets say you play England, then Flemish and Germany are an easy going factions.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

hmm i try to do as many missions as i can, and i didnt start to use assasins heavily till later in the game (for teutons i even helped poland by doing a mission to assasinate their king ). The rest you said though about launching a crusade, never going on allie's land, and having a good reputation is all something i've tried to do. Although i'll try and scale down on the assasinations a bit. (i still dont understand why scotland betrayed me as ireland )
