Sounds like the priest did it to "get people talking," or, use word of mouth and controversy to advertise his beliefs. From a secular point of view, its a mildly unethical form of advertisement. From a religious point of view, it's complete irreverence and blasphemy. Moreover, its a complete lapse in judgment, with a hypocritical undertone.

Indeed. It is one thing to put up a poster of say the baby Jesus and be like "Hey remember this guy? He's the reason for Christmas, not Santa" just as like a little reminder to religious people not to forget the religious aspect of it. But using the "tactics", so to speak, that the priest did to attract attention only reflects negatively.

Although the guy who vandalized it really didn't need to do that either on the other hand.

Then again, it had an implicitly sexual slant to it, which might be around children. In this case, I might actually side with the man. He didn't do anything that I would ascribe to true vandalism, such as wanton destruction of property with a malicious intent.
