    Default Lil help please?

    Hey guys,

I recently got Extended realism 3.4 working, but am stuck there. I downloaded and extracted 3.5.3 like I was supposed to, but when I fire up the game, it still says version 3.4. Can anybody give me a walkthrough for downloading, extracting, etc, these patches? I am brand new to PC gaming but have become obsessed with it, ever since i discovered MTW2 a month ago. i started researching, decided RTW would be more my taste, discovered rtrpe, pulled my hair out trying to get that working, and then came upon extended realism. So, please instruct me like you would an infant. I am feenin for this game!

    Thanks!

Hi! I think I can help you. You're probably putting the patch folder in the wrong place. Once you've got the patch extracted, open it up and keep clicking on folders till you see the ExRM folder. Then drag that into the same folder as your RTW.exe file is.

Quinn - Which file contains the "exe"? Why don't give the folder/file sequence? For someone new to computing, like my grandfather for instant, this is not an easy advise.

Even I have, at times, problems to determine what to do when only general advise is given.
I hope, you understand and do not take this personally.

    Thank you.

I thought about being more specific, but with the different versions and different owner names I don't actually know what his directory will be called. I was hoping he'd just search his hard drive for RTW.exe if he wasn't sure where it was. (I guess I should have mentioned that.)

    It'll look something like C:\Program Files\COMPANY\Rome Total War\, probably.

Oh, and there's a sample of what it should look like in the download instructions thread: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=179715

OK, what I have done is extracted the exrm folder into the rtw-bi creative assembly folder. When I go into the folder, I have alot of different folders. I have the exrm folder which contains the data, miles saves, preferences, etc. There is also a vanilla rtw and bi folder in here. The exrm folder that I extracted is in here also. When I go into that folder, it has a custom, data, docs, preferences, etc. as well as "shortcut to rometw-bi.exe. When I double click on this shortcut 3.4 starts. This is where I am stuck. Is the switch to 3.5.3 worth it? Is it that much different than 3.4?

    Thanks

Yes, I think it's a substantial improvement. 3.4.1 is a decent version, but you're so close to having 3.5.3 installed.

Ok, I see your problem. You should not have two separate ExRM folders. Open the one you extracted, hit ctrl-A to select everything inside it, then hit ctrl-x to cut, then open up the ExRM folder that has that shortcut you mentioned. Then hit ctrl-V to paste. Hit "yes" to any dialog boxes that warn you about overwriting.

OK, Im starting over. I deleted the copy I made of the 3.4 version. I only made that copy in case I screwed something up, like I did.

Now I have one clean copy of Exrm 3.4. I have downloaded the patch. Do I just extract it to my desktop? Then, I copy into which folder exactly? I did that the first time I tried and it gave me all of the overwrite prompts and I accepted, but my shortcut was still taking me to 3.4. Please be specific. I will give you more information if needed.

Also- Before I do anything, this is what I have. I go into c:prog files\the creative assem\"main folder"\Here I have alot of folders. i have vanilla versions of rtw and rtw-bi and I have an exrm folder. I go in there I have custom, data, docs, preferences, saves, campaign map reset, some logos, and a shortcut to RomeTW-BI.exe. When I click on this folder, a prompt comes up saying windows cannot find 'rometw-bi.exe'. etc. BUT, this is where my 3.4 shortcut on my desktop is pointing to. Is that enough info?

    Thank you very much

You want to extract the folder to the "Rome - Total War" folder.

Mine looks like this: D:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War

You want to put 3.4 into that folder. It should be called ExRM. You can see an example of what this should look like in one of the sticky threads.

When it comes to 3.5.3, you want to extract it to your desktop. When you do this, you want to copy everything inside that ExRM folder, and paste them inside the ExRM that is inside the Rome - Total War folder.

    Thus:
    Desktop\ExRM\folders&files
    Copy those

    C:\Program Files\The_Creative_Assembly\Rome - Total War\ExRM\folders&files
and paste them in that location so you get prompted to replace files (in which case you want "yes to all".

Does that help or would you like me to try a simpler explanation?

I will try as soon as I get home. Should I make a copy of my clean 3.4 in case I do something wrong again?

I already have 3.4 working. So I will extract 3.5.3 to my desktop. Then copy all of the contents in the folder, not the entire folder right? Then I paste it in for me C:\Program Files\the Creative Assembly\RTRXR\ExRM. Accept overrights.

    Is that right?

Carados - that is exactly what I did with my failed install. I also pressed o.k. when asked to over-write. The game loads. I select the faction, etc.; however, when clicking "Start" a black box briefly appears and the a message that "Windows encountered an error and has to close" - back to Desktop. I am having Windows7.

It seems this is specific to the Patch (Graphics?). Strangely all game folders and files are in read-mode-only after download. Perhaps an Installer would help.

I do not expect an easy solution to this and it may be only an isolated problem. However, I thought my problem will help others and the mod team.

Does anybody else play with Windows7?

FR: Did you follow the Vista installation instructions I linked for you in the other thread?

I followed your advise and the suggestion provided there (however, their is no easy switch in Window7 to get it turned off), but it did not change anything for me.
It is strange that I could install the 3.4 version and have it working, but the patch is giving me problems. Why can the mod installation pass and not the Patch?

I placed the question in the Basement and hope to get an answer.

I shall go on and play the 3.4 version until someone comes up with an installer, perhaps that will help.

Its working! Thanks for all of the help. When I started it up the first time, it crashed after I picked a faction and pressed start. But, I went to the campaign map reset and double clicked on it and the game is running smooth.

    Glad it works!

The campaign map reset catches nearly everyone out, so don't worry about that.
