Best RTR mod so far?

Of course, why not, it's the season for giving and having treats.

I must say that I agree with a lot of the sentiments expressed here. RTR6 Gold/Platinum was and is a classic. I think it was the first full conversion for this wonderful game, RTW, and it certainly set the bench mark by which all subsequent mods were judged.

FOE is simply a progression of that idea and set of values. However, it is far from being finalised, as there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, on FOE 2. Not only a larger map, but more factions, a better balanced (we hope) campaign. In all, a much more immersive experience.

Classics don't happen by chance, it takes a lot of time, work and effort, and we hope that FOE will eventually join 5 Gold/Platinum in that pantheon.

I would go platinum as well and I would use the mod switch verison in case you want to check any other mods as well. There are also a couple of mini mods that can be installed onto a RTR Platinum mod.

I'm sure you guys haven't played FOE, or you would have answered differently. The RTR 6-series where a leap forward, and a total conversion. But the new VII - releases beat them at many, if not most points. You should really try RTR VII - FOE, the newest release. It has a huge map, and focusses around the western mediteranian. It pushes RTW to the limits, I don't think much better mod's than this one are possible

I am currently playing a Roman FOE campaign and am enjoying it very much and Maurits is right there are many areas that FOE beats Platinum but as and intro to RTR mods I think Platinum is the way to go or just try both as they should play from the same install of RTW if you use the mod swtiched version of Platinum.

The map in FOE 2 will be physically larger than a lot of maps, but it will still not cover, geographically, the traditional "full world" of a Grand Campaign. This is because we have hit the limits of the RTW engine when it comes to regions and settlements. To make the map larger we would have to have dropped the mini-region concept, and then the campaign would have to be completely redesigned, which would not only take a lot longer to do, but also lose an important dynamic that is an integral part of FOE's structure.

You should really be more precise. The FoE map covers a smaller geographic extent than some other mods. None actually have a "full world map" though and those maps that do cover a large expanse do so at the expense of the map's resolution.
