Washington D.C. City Council votes to legalize same sex marriage

WASHINGTON - The Washington, D.C., City Council voted Tuesday to legalize gay marriage in the nation's capital, handing supporters a victory after a string of recent defeats in Maine, New York and New Jersey.

Mayor Adrian Fenty has promised to sign the bill, which passed 11-2, and gay couples could begin marrying as early as March. Congress, which has final say over Washington's laws, could reject it, but Democratic leaders have suggested they are reluctant to do so.

The bill had overwhelming support among council members and was expected to pass, though opponents have vowed to try to get Congress or voters to overturn it.

The interesting part of this story is that Congress for the first time will be voting on whether or not to allow same sex marriage, if on a smaller scale.

I dont have a problem with this, and I am one of those damn conservatives you guys want to spite. However I do think its quite ironic that this only became a huge issue after the tax laws were changed to remove the marriage penalty tax, but thats another issue. Before that some gay couples were quite happy not to be married because of the tax savings, now that the tax savings are the other way around its become a bigger issue.

My problem with the entire issue is this: When its done piecemeal like this it creates confusion. A marriage that was performed in DC may not be recognized as legal Baltimore, or NY, or LA. This creates problems, many problems.

Ah, what a shame. Thankfully, D.C. is just a little city. The fact that it is the capital, though, means that it will be a beacon of hope to gay people everywhere. Oh well! Time to retire to a monastery, I guess.

No , the entire point of the gay marriage drives is to allow them the same rights and privileges as straight couples in terms of legal ends, this is not some tightly kept dirty little secret as most of the outspoken supporters have acknowledged this many times over. The problem with all civil union laws I've seen put on the table is they aren't equal when compared to those granted to a married couple, thus the outrage against civil unions.
