Icon1 The "I like to kill Romans" thread

There seems to be alot of Rome lovers here, I was just wondering who all out there is not a fan of the Romans? It can be any reason, you absolutely hate them, you have not use for them, they are too stereotypical, or too boring.

    1. Why do you dislike/not use the Romans?

    2. What other factions do you prefer?

    3. What units do you use to fight/slaughter Romans?

    4.
    a. Are you a "Civilized Hellene" putting down those upstart Romans?
    b. Are you a "Ravenous Barbarian" looking for loot, pillage, and anarchy?
    c. Are you a "Greedy Easterner" looking for riches and glory?
    d. Are you a "Evil Carthaginian" looking to crush the opposition and start your own empire?

(these are intended as humorous stereotypes, nothing more, no prejudices intended)

    5. If you use mods, what mod and what faction do you use to destroy the Eternal City?

    I shall start

    1. For me personally I have no use for the Romans, they get a bit boring after a while. Too much of the same old thing.

    2. I prefer to use Spain, or Carthage.

    3. I like to use Numidian Cavalry against Romans, for some reason they work wonders. I also like to use slingers, and skirmishers. My favorite unit to use against the Romans is the Bull Warriors. They are like a Fanatical Barbarian version of Legionaries.

    4. I am a Ravenous Barbarian!!

    5. I like to use EB to desolate Rome and her lands. I prefer to use the Lusotannan. Awesome barbarians who are civilized enough to keep their clothes on.

    1. Too overpowered with unrealistic stuff in vanilla RTW. Although they are great at RTRPE mod.

    2. Greek states and Seleucids

    3. phalanks and cavalry

    4. Civilised Hellene

    5. RTRPE . Macedon

Note: I am an online player.

    1. Infantry is too overpowered (certainly not unbeatable) and the cav is extremely unrealistic. Typical armies consist of urbans and praetorians in MP.

    2. Macedon, Seleucia and Armenia.

    3. Cataphracts, Silver Shields and Archers.

    4. a.) Civilized Hellene (my preferred style is phalanx based armies, with cav support for mobility)

    5. I don't use mods

I only sometimes dislike Romans. There are many places where I wish they would have lost, though I don't really hate them and I always try to salvage the empire from destruction in BI.

    1. Well, Theyre a "Jack of all trades, Masters of none" faction. i prefer more mobile factions, Preferably with HA. The most annoying thing would be that every noob that picks them seems to take massive amounts of unupgraded infantry and actually wonders why he is losing.

    2. Any faction except for Egypt and Gaul.

    3. Whichever units are selectable on the MP army bar related to that faction.

    4. "Imperialist Clanmember" that wants to heal or purge all noobness... I'm an all-round MP player. i specialize in Balanced armies, but am also good at Skirmishing and Rushing.

    1. Overpowered...i agree with max's comments here.

    2. Armenia, Pontus, Seleucia

    3. Superior cav, competent missiles forces and a pike line that'll hold(ie no levies lol)

    4. A&C.

I did not say they were overpowered. Au contraire. They have the best infantry but concerning cav and archers they lack a certain essential strength... you would need a skilled rome player to overcome such things.

    1. I do use them, I just find them boring and .. typical.

    2. Armenia, Macedon and Carthage

    3. Cataphracts, Phlanxes and Elephants!

What i meant was overpowered from a realistic perspective. Perhaps i could've put that better.

The main point was i agreed with your comments about the cav/archers. They get kinda owned by the catas...generally...

Best infrantry...debatable...best none phalanx inf certainly...however in a fair fight(ie grassy flatland 1urban head on vs ?) the result might be arguable both ways. Of course phalanx length will have something to do with it. However there infantry, i concede, are very good.

A skilled rome player but it could still come down to luck.

GG urbans take down phalanxes if not flanked in time.if you have more phalanxes than there are urban units you could assign two to them though.

In the beginning, when I just bought the game, I played with the Romans, and it was fun...
But after a while, I liked it more playing as an underdog.
Like the Greeck cities, their cities are spread along the map making it difficult in the beginning of the game. Or the Selucids, they start surrounded by enemies and with the powerfull Egypt at their doorstep...
Now I like to use chariots, man when they hit enemy ranks!!!
    I like to play civilized.
    No mods.

    1. Why do you dislike/not use the Romans?
I don't play as the Romans because I find them too easy. I've actually only completed one Roman campaign, and never played as the Julii.

    2. What other factions do you prefer?
    Most others

    3. What units do you use to fight/slaughter Romans?
I like using Warbands to trample them, as well as Levy Pikes and Light Lancers.

    4.

I don't really play only one type of faction. Play them all, you'll understand what works best for each faction then and work out the strengths and weaknesses of all armies you see

    1. Julii: Too hard, too much unrest. Scipii: Cities grow too fast. Squalor. Brutii: gets many regions taking up not much land.

    2. Carthage, Gaul, Germania

    3. I prefer Poeni Infantry, Upgraded Warbands and Light Chariots.

    4. Barbarian.

    5. Iberia: Total War. Transalpine Gauls. Then, your taunts go from "Stinking Rats" to "GO YOURSELF!" or "I AM A FREE MAN!" Plus, you get Berserker Cavalry!

    1. Why do you dislike/not use the Romans?
When playing with other factions, the Romans are the most dangerous faction besides of Egypt and Brittania. The main problem of the romans is that they have 4 factions which the 3 (without the Senate) have the main purpose to expand in Europe, Afrika and Greece/Asia Minor. They have powerfull units and their economy (especially the Brutii) is fast growing. Their technology's are almost the best and their post-marian units are almost the best units availlable.
Thats why i don't like the romans when playing other non-roman factions. Only on RTR it's balanced and fun to play.

    2. What other factions do you prefer?
Egypt, The Greek City States, Brittania and Carthage (:
    3. What units do you use to fight/slaughter Romans?
Chariots, powerfull cavalery units like Cataphracts, Armenia is my favorite faction when playing powerfull cavalery units, and the tactic i most use is the Ghengis Khan tactic, quickly charge and when charged retreat and wave them so their morale is broken.
    Hoplites are handy too.
    4.
    a. Are you a "Civilized Hellene" putting down those upstart Romans?
Depends on what stage of expansion they are. When really powerfull i'll start a plague in the roman cities and when war i'll take the defending position when taken over one of their main city's. At all cost they try to take it back but when 3 full stacks of my armies near or in that city, they will quicky notice they've maken a big mistake killing all their troops.
    b. Are you a "Ravenous Barbarian" looking for loot, pillage, and anarchy?
I love pax romana, and anarchy = no order = no stable empire.
    c. Are you a "Greedy Easterner" looking for riches and glory?
    Also.
    d. Are you a "Evil Carthaginian" looking to crush the opposition and start your own empire?
Well i'd rather take over an empire than destroy it. Nothing worth in the game.
(these are intended as humorous stereotypes, nothing more, no prejudices intended)

    5. If you use mods, what mod and what faction do you use to destroy the Eternal City?
Eternal city? ehh Carthage? in RTR
