    Default Southern Pride?

    Okay,

Well im from the American South, and had ancestors that fought on the confederate side of the war. I see the Confederate Flag as a symbol of the South. I know thats not what it was originally used for, but thats what it became. Now people seem to see it as a modern Symbol of Racism.

So the Question, is the Condefederate Flag an acceptable symbol of the south, or simply a figue of hate and racsim.

If your not from america we really dont care about your opinions on this matter since you have nothing to do with it.

My opinion, Its more of a symbol of states rights then a symbol of slavery but its more of a symbol of cecession then anything. Therefore i think it shouldnt be allwoed to be Shown on Government buildings (Court houses, police disctricts, etc)

Which states rights? Just the Confederate states? My, we're walking on very uncertain constitutional ground here, aren't we? Not much thinking through, I reckon?

The civil war was about STATES RIGHTS.(capitlazed to show importance, not shouting). In their day the constitution was much more about states rights and every year state power is lost. Many die-hard southerner and others see this has a horrible fate....

Given that a century or two has passed, it's hardly impressive that both sides of your family would have fought on both sides. Hell, members of my family have fought on both sides of the Napoleonic Wars.
Well first you must consider that America has recieved heavey immagration after this time, and not everybody at the time fought. Also only recently have the regions really mixed. So yes haveing a single ancestor in America that fought is "impressive" so to say.

No it wasn't. You need a history lesson or two. It may have been a part, it certainly wasn't the sole reason.

Wow... talk about ignorance. Very nice Ferret. A new low.

I say the Confederate Flag is about Heritage, not Hate, and parts of my family fought on both sides.

    Care to explain?

Explain what? I wasn’t trying to impress anyone... I was simply stating my opinion, like you did. Except I was civil and respectful about it.

That's also what the flags that the dudes on the corner sell say. It may be heritage to some folks, but me being from the South - I know a lot of people use it as a symbol of racism.

Ah, yeah, but i really dont see it as a symbol of succesion. Sure it began that way, but symbols change their meaning. Many Flag waven southerners are some of the most patriotic people you will ever meet. People get scolded in shcool for wearing the flag on shirts etc, but in my mind they are just showing their patriotism, like Pueta Ricans do by wearing their Flag(I get alot of that in Florida, people living anywhere else may not really understand this)

The main reason was Lincoln, if he had just gave up fort Sumter and the Fort in Pensacola and had just let the south go their own way there would not have been a war. The right of seccesion wasn't prohibited by the constitution so Lincoln should have just let them go. So I'd say it was about states rights as the right to secession and the right to own slaves were rights that the constitution didn't prohibit from the states so the states should have been able to decide for themselves.

Even if that happened, a war was bound to break out within several years anyways, and the southerners would keep asking for more, Lincoln wouldnt just appease them forever.

I believe his point is they LEGALLY could succed.. My main Beef with Lincoln is that he put the coubtry under martial law, but thats for another debate..

Confederate flag is often used in my country too on the football matches between team from southern part of the country and the team from the capital. The flag itself usually ends up in the rival fans' butts but it's main purpose is to symbolize south I guess.

Anyway, yeah flag became symbol of racism which I don't exactly admire (it sickens me to see guy wearing confederate flag T-shirt with swastika and big capital U above it) but remember that even in the past it was a symbol of slavers and only common soldiers looked at it as an emblem of southern pride.
