Default Disabled Sex Offenders Get Palatial Home

Sex crims to lap up luxury home

    • Ellen Whinnett
    • From: Sunday Herald Sun

THREE intellectually disabled sex offenders are to move into a new $800,000 house on a quiet suburban street - courtesy of the Victorian taxpayer.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The "pedophile palace" - a five-bedroom home with flat-screen TVs, computers and landscaped gardens - is on a quiet street in Bellfield.

The Department of Human Services has informed neighbours the home's residents have disabilities.
What the department did not say is that the men are intellectually disabled sex offenders, all of whom are subject to court orders that force them to receive treatment.

Should taxpayers fund paedophiles' houses? Have your say below

Heavy security surrounds the home, which has a secure back-yard hidden behind a fence.
But the security is just a front, with a source confirming all three men were allowed out unsupervised.

The source said the three men were "let loose in the community" to see how they reacted around children. DHS workers would quiz them when they returned to see if they had experienced arousal while looking at children out in the community."We're experimenting with them on kids in the community," the source said. The DHS has owned the house for more than 10 years, and sex offenders, including these three men, have lived in the home before. But this year, the DHS bulldozed the home and built the sprawling new residence, which stands out against the other modest homes in the street. The men are currently living in a home in another suburb -- next door to children. The source said DHS staff "crossed their fingers" when the men were allowed out.

"They're street-wise criminals," the source said. The men were due to move back into the newly completed home during the week, but the DHS changed its plans after being contacted by the Sunday Herald Sun. DHS spokesman Brendan Ryan said: "The existing residence has operated in this location for at least 15 years with no negative impact on the surrounding community and has simply been replaced with a building that better meets design standards for people with a disability. The clients are monitored around the clock for support from experienced DHS staff at the residence. The Sunday Herald Sun asked several neighbours if they were concerned. One neighbour, Lola Lazarri, said she had lived next door to the home for 23 years and apart from noise and the sound of breaking windows, had not experienced problems. "I'm not happy about it, but I'm not going to make a big fuss," she said.Corrections Minister Bob Cameron's spokesman, Cameron Scott, said the Government had strengthened the supervision and support measures for sex offenders, and that Victoria had one of the lowest reoffending rates in the nation.

"These provisions link supervision with appropriate treatment and programs both during and after people have completed their sentence," Mr Scott said. "Prior to Labor coming to government, these people were let free without any restrictions at all."

In my view the only payment the state should be making is for their execution by firing squad. I bet a lot of hard working poor would like a 5 bedroom house to live in with plasma screen TVs in Victoria rent-free, but they cant afford it, when garbage like this get it for free on the taxpayer dime. Disgraceful. If they are to be anywhere at all, it would be in a single room boarding house where they work for their room and board.

No but on the flip side there are pedophiles in florida living under a bridge because there is no where else for them to go due to restrictions and their crime. At some point western society on a whole needs to figure out what going to do with these people, if they are too dangerous to be released then they shouldnt be released but if going to release them they have to go *somewhere* and by pushing them into conditions were they have no place to go is completely counterproductive. There is this trailer park that houses pedophiles, the owner is her self a victim of being molested as a child. She evidently runs it strict, the police monitor it and there has only been a single incident where one person living there got tossed back in jail. They run therapy groups etc. Despite this people have sought to shutdown "pedophile paradise" as CNN called it. So there has to be balance.

The isnt as simple as they are all evil bastards and if they are WHY are we releasing them then?

What we should do in this country is to build a couple camps in the desert, and in the far north in Alaska, and ship these s there instead of paying $50,000 an inmate a year. Make them work, prison shouldnt be a vacation.

It shouldn't be a concentration camp either.

Go spend a month in a state prison and come back and tell me it's a vacation.

    Speaking from experience?

I've never actually been incarcerated in Her Majesty's, but I have spoken to many who have. Being beaten with weights, sexually assaulted in the showers by other prisoners with AIDS, attacked with syringes, bashed by guards - it's pretty rough. You are less than nothing in Victorian and NSW maximum security prisons. I have a good friend who went to jail for two years, killed a kid while speeding. He was otherwise an ordinary guy, not someone who would usually be in jail for anything. He was a funny kind of guy so the prisoners liked his jokes and left him alone, he also worked in the kitchen as a cook and they liked his cooking. But he said he saw a man have his head bashed against a concrete wall by another prisoner until his head came apart and he was dead, saw another man have his throat cut in the exercise yard. Knew of other guys who were held down and gang raped.

I recognise that people need to go to prison, and it shouldnt be a holiday camp. But you also should not acquire AIDS or become a vegetable or be murdered because you have been sent to prison for a year or two on tax evasion or forgery charges. As for these guys getting a big house with a plasma TV, that's not on.

Mongrel said something about how chavs could buy their own TV. Why can't the sex offender then? Interesting theory that all poor people need to do is work harder, I think you've just eliminated poverty with this idea - why didn't anyone think of that before now?

Minimum security places are a bit more friendly, workshops and so on. But don't kid yourself about maximum security.

    ^ Pretty much this
Our standard policy of releasing them and then preventing them from getting jobs gives them little reason to want to reform since they are pretty much screwed anyway.

Even if the rent was paid for, some working families cant afford to furnish a 5 bedroom house and have plasma screen TVs. If you can, great for you. Many can't.

Executing pedophiles would not be 'genocide' unless you believe that pedophiles have their own race, country or language.

They certainly don't need a 5 bedroom home decked out by the taxpayer rent free. If they want state accommodation, they get a room in a boarding house which they pay for. That's all. If they don't like the state accommodation on parole, then don't commit the crime. Simple.

You're missing the point. People that actually might TRY to adjust and go back to living a semblance of a normal life will be pushed right back to where they started and resort to committing these acts again. This doesn't go for just sex offenders, but all other ex-cons.

If you had to choose between a piss-poor halfway house and a minimum wage job to pay for it and prison with free room and board, food, healthcare, etc what would you be more inclined to strive for? Plus crime does pay much better than the kind of jobs you land under those conditions.

Because a 'source' is the Government, right Simon?

All the Government has officially confirmed is that 3 intellectually-disabled sex offenders have been moved into a house. DHS has said nothing more.

Oh, and the Herald Sun is far from a leading newspaper. Try 'The Australian', 'Sydney Morning Herald' or 'The Age' for quality journalism.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herald_Sun

"The Herald Sun is a morning tabloid newspaper based in Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria Australia. It is published by The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd, a subsidiary of News Limited and owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation."

    Fail.

You may note (you wont, will you?) that the article itself never, ever suggests that these men are paedophiles, yet the article is obssessed with children in the area and even carries the question, in bold "Should taxpayers fund paedophiles' houses?"

It's a perfect example of weasel words employed to rile up people like yourself that are too eager to put things that support their views on a podium.

Well it would be genocide on males cause males are tossed villified regardless of the actual charges (aka age difference of say a year oops sorry you are a sex offender) while women get cheered for making a kid a "man" and get to be on talk shows.

They certainly don't need a 5 bedroom home decked out by the taxpayer rent free. If they want state accommodation, they get a room in a boarding house which they pay for. That's all. If they don't like the state accommodation on parole, then don't commit the crime. Simple.
No you are right they dont deserve that but what they do deserve is a chance at putting together sometype of life for themselves and if for whatever reason they are a continued danger then they shouldnt be released to begin with. And I say this as a dad who would literally kill anyone who touched my daughter. Put them somewhere to live yes but someplace where they can live in a humane and safe way for them AND others otherwise wth is the point.

think we need to re-evaluate what constitutes a sex offender and what we do afterward with them. I know someone who is on the list in my town for pissing while drink in public. lol.
Yep that is why the laws on the whole entire thing need to scraped and rewritten from scratch, it is so messed up by politicans desire to "appear tough" on crime and show little regard for the actual crime. It is hilarious that a guy who pees in a parking lot, a 18 yr old who has sex with a 16 yr old and a 50 year old serial child molestor all get on the same list...

The more people complain about prisoners eating up tax payer money, the more I get annoyed. The very same people that complain about their too much crime on the street and not enough law and order complain about that. What are we gonna do? Genocide an entire group? The logical thing to do is keep them separate and in a way where they aren't tempted to commit crimes.
