well ive been thinking and this has bothered me. will there be more advances mplacements such as trenches and deployable stone walls, or at least fix the sandbags in empire so your soldires take cover. anyway will we also se more poison gases like quicklime. Id just love to wage gas warfare on my enemies.

I'd like to use gas for warfare, however knowing the BAI, it would probably end up causing more casualties on both sides of the engagement, than it should.
The extra development time will allow us to finalize and polish Empire, making it the most accomplished and epic of the Total War series." said Kieran Brigden, Studio Communications Manager at The Creative Assembly. "There is a great deal of anticipation around Empire: Total War and we want to ensure that it is the benchmark for strategy games upon its release.

haha thats a pretty sadistic thought to wage all out gas warfare. that would be really cool tho if they would fix and add all those things.

I'd say that those would be more fitting in a late 19th and 20h century game.

I have to agree with sandbags but not with trenches.
Those were already quite common during the 30 years war, and there not only during sieges but also during field battles like Lützen.

I personally would love to see real trenches, not only those wooden planks with fabric cover, also the artillery entrechments could "move" few centimeters down into the earth... with the new deformable terrain i think it should be possible...if those holes are real 3D-holes and not only a "fake" with a normal map applied.

Trench warfare more or less started with the US Civil War (i believe); i don't know of any examples prior to that one. And it had to do mostly with the increased (accurate) range of rifles and better gunnery skills with artillery.

Gas warfare didn't really get anywhere before WW1 because of poor chemistry before that.

But the TW games are not terribly concerned with accuracy and/or completeness. I mean, tunnelling under a castle wall as a means of siege-breaking should have been part of the medieval TW's. And siege-breaking in ETW seemed to practice ninja-ropes despite centuries of practice with ladders. So....

Some would say trench warfare started with this man Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba in 1503.

Post Marian reform legionaires used trenches on the battlefield regularly, not just for their camps or during sieges. "Trench warfare" started with Marius' reforms (107 BCE).
"I'll tell you what rule sir....we applied Rule 303. We caught them and we shot them under RULE THREE OH THREE!"

Indeed when you think about it yeah. But in the 19th century rifles were becoming very accurate to such an extent that hiding in trenches was generally a better plan than standing in a neat line á la 18th century. So from that period trenches really became a must.

And yes I agree, real trenches would be nice instead of the 'cheap trick' of placing a sloping structure in on the battlefield and calling it a 'trench'...
