Being a Canadian, I must say that I [and I speak for a lot people here I think] am most embarrassed by my Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, and his divisive, obstructionist politics.
The latest load of crap to come out of Ottawa is regarding the climate change conference in Copenhagen, when Harper said that he would only go if President Obama was going. After that nice little reminder that we are in total thrall to America, comes the lovely bits of garbage out of the Guardian newpaper in Britain talking about throwing us of the Commonwealth. And don't forget to mention that Harper has totally tarnished Canada's image in the eyes of the world by doing absolutely nothing about climate change, which will deeply affect this country like every other one.
After having received the fossil award several times, we are now viewed as 'in the way' of progress on environmental protection because of our government's intrasigence on environmental stewardship and protection. Because of many issues regarding national unity and the disfunctional state our country is in, and the powerful influence that corporations and executives wield in our government, it is extremely unlikely we will make any progress on issues of national importance.
Suffice to say, Canada ain't in great shape. But there are many millions of people here who wish it were otherwise, and would try to change things. The unstable political climate, however, makes that nearly impossible.
