    Default played for the first time - impressions

    first of all a very important question: youre are the same guys that built stainless steel right? so how come when i attack a city and the garrison comes out to fight me, i start so close to the gate that suddenly im in disadvantage? i mean, you already fixed it in stainless steel so what the hell??

    now to the impression from my first game
    after a quick look at the advantages/disadvantages of the races i noticed that basicly the bad guys have no cavalary. so i figured ill take legolas elves and carnage my way to easy victory. and in the first day
    (yes a whole day), thats exactly what happened. i would attack with 20 regiments of archers and kill armies of about 2000-3000 often without losing more than 50 men.
    and i have killed like that maybe a gazilion armies.
    dispached the mordor enclave right at the beggining and the misty mountain orcs a few hours later
    got myself about 15-20 cities and thought that life is good.
    and than suddenly i hear that gondor is gone. at which point i understood that mordor has taken all of its 10 or so cities....
    the except for rohan and gondor i didnt notice that anyone was too keen on helping me with this war.
    anyways i continued my rampage (and by now all my archers have very high promotions) until i met the olog hai (the armored trolls). suddenly i noticed that all the other mordorian orcs have started wearing a much thicker armor and suddenly it takes considerable effort to win.
    than they desimated my army by making about 10 regiments run away from one cavalery regiment and a few trolls. this is very annoying actually i dont think a thousand men should run away from 1 troll (which happened to me). it is my policy in all strategy games to not load, but this was too much injustice for me. the entire game i had only two armies and one of them is gone now. now i saved but i dont see how i can save this situation since the archers are just no longer good enough.

    on the other hand having massicred with them maybe 10000000 orcs with maybe a few hundred casualties, i cant understand how this game can be won by any other strategy. i mean with rohan or gondor i would have lost thousands of units to accomplish the same thing.
    so i dont know i you manage but ill of course try it again

    ps i played on vh/vh just like was adviced in the begining
    pss i read the book twice and saw the movie twenty times so im VERY HAPPY that you made this mod
    it really made my winter

    Welcome to the forums!

    A quick search will yield about 4-6 threads on how to kill trolls, as well as advice for pretty much every faction. It seems like there's a new "help, I'm Gondor and am losing" thread every week. There are also various sub-mods that try to create their own vision of game balance. The two most popular are DAC and RR/RC.

    If you don't like how Eriador is currently set up, that faction is being redone right now. For status updates, look at the various preview threads.

    The vh/vh advice in the beginning is only for masochists

    you do realize that there is a tread called "first impresions" sticked in the first page, don΄t you?

    anyway, i don΄t see what teh problem is. Silvan elves are a bad match for figthing olog-hais, but by that point you should have elite silvan archers allready, what makes this much easier. plus if you only needed two armies so far, you should have amased quite a fortune, i sugest you to use it to recruit as many armies as you can and to build recruitment buildings.
    also i din΄t know where your complains come from. it is only natural that, if you figth using just two armies, one of them will eventually be destroyed. in fact, i would say you had quite an easy ride so far.

    at the moment i play silvan elves for the first time too. i really like the different
    ways of required startegies in fighting. i fought olog hai only once for now,
    but this was quite easy - my elite heavy silvan archer put down over half of
    them until they reached my lines - the elven spearmen and some fire arrows
    did the rest. it seemed way more easy than it did with some other factions.
    but even the silvan eleves without charging cavalry have other ways to deal
    with them. first tactics (!) and second ballistas.
    (little tip - try to spy on mordor armies with olog hais, than try to ambush them
    and/or try to fight them in forests - that seem to work quite well for me.)

    and for the problem with very huge armies that destroyed gondor and surly are
    a major threat for rohan right now in your campaign, you have to remember the
    books and films that you saw so often - the alliance of elves and men.
    i myself use my spies to see mordor coming and send help to gondor and rohan to
    deal with them. it surly is quite hard to get alliances and military access with them
    but what do you expect - especially when playing on VH.

    What you said is very interesting, but I just have a minor comment on this. Veterancy does not affect shooting accuracy nor ranged attack in vanilla.

    Never understood why, but it's only affecting melee attack, same as MTW2.

    If you mean experience then, yes, it does improve archer accuracy (but not damage). Or it certainly did in vanilla M2TW/Kingdoms. Accuracy is not shown on the unit cards so there's no visible statistic change but try a custom 1-archer-unit vs 1-militia-unit battle twice with the only difference being experience and you'll see more kills. I haven't tried this with TATW though (only Kingdoms).

    EDIT: I could be wrong but I think that the accuracy-increasing thing is hardcoded, not something that modders can take out. However, some units in TATW are already highly accurate so increases from experience might be negligible.

    No offense, but seemingly the first thing you guys do after registering is to blindly open another new thread even if it is named exactly the same as an already existing sticky thread.

    My first impression of this thread I got several months ago, when I looked in the First Impressions thread created by the team

    I don't think it's hardcoded, but it's not in the "export_descr_unit.txt". You can change their range and ammo from there though.

    From what I can remember, you are able to set the accuracy per unit, which will not change with experience. If I finnish total economy mod, I will check if I can make a fix for archery accuracy and experience.

    I first need to do some good research, all these things are not clear in my head.

    EDIT: I think if someone knows best, that's PB. So he will be the first I will ask...

    @Myskin
    You have the answer

    In export_descr_unit.txt can be changed :

    Damage=>number 4
    Accuracy =>number 2
    Range =>number 180
    Quantity for ammo =>number 30

    stat_pri 4, 2, uruk_mass_heavy_arrow, 180, 30, missile,

    I honestly dont see how people find Gondor difficult. I play them in single player and hotseats and though they are a challenge it isnt anything too difficult since you start with lots of land that is safe from the enemy allowing for a powerful economy to raise armies (and Gondor has the best infantry and cavalry period, thier militia can even duke it out with some professional soilders). I usually blitz early game against both Mordor and Harad or simply focus all my efforts on one while keeping the other at bay. Then I turtle and allow my economy to catch up with my armies while defending against multiple evil stacks. Once I raise more troops and gain access to tier 2 units I blitz once more

    Where do you mod that?
