Default Powerfull Rig but Still Very Long Turn length

Hey guys. Well I am now playing SS on a pretty high end machine, it can handle M2 and Empire on full graphics no problem i can post parameters if you need.

But it seems the turn length in SS are still taking me at least 2 min at the beginning of campaign and increase from there. Now im aware of the trick where you can remove some campaign events like princesses coming of age, holy councils, and faction leader deaths, in order to reduce turn length. I have done so and saw a slight improvement, however as i said turn length never take less then 2 min usually more.

But i have read of many people having 40sec-1min turn lengths or even less and it does not seem to be contingent on their PC rig.

So im just wondering if its not the machine, what else could have such dramatic effects on turn length. There must be a reason.

Could it be that i use RR/RC.

Yeah it's RR/RC, mine went from 30sec in the beginning to over 1min but i don't care anymore because it's worth it.

Yes, RR/RC slows machines down. It's just extra strategy planning time. I have a high end PC and turns are about a minute or less with RR/RC.

I just find other things to do while waiting.

With a laptop (second computer), after hitting the end turn button, I usually check to see what new threads may have popped up, check for some other random information, do some photo editing (for the AAR), go to the bathroom, or go make a pot of tea. Quite often I'll have the game sitting there after it's come back to my control, and I'll be more interested writing something on here, like right now.

I throw tennis balls up and down and around the room. And drink lots of water.

This is a problem in vanilla Stainless Steel to. It has to do with extra strategy time for the AI and also the sheer number of factions that are active on the field. As you get into the late game and more factions are killed off you'll notice the AI turns are much faster. It also has to do with all the units and agents moving around on the strategy map, they still have to be rendered by the game engine even if you can't see them...

Yep that's rc/rr. My machine's pretty high end too but it slows down when the ai gets its turn.
On SS vanilla, turns go by really quick.

When I first played SS 6.1 , my time was an unbelievable 5-6 minutes
But when i upgraded it to the 6.2 compilation, amazingly it dropped to 1-2 min in the beggining, and slightly increasing as the game progressed.

But the long waiting time has its positives too. I, for example, I either do my homework, or work out, or watch TV, or play on my Bass Guitar

Why do people say its just extra strategy planning time that anoys me. Once its your turn you have as much time as you want and you can plan alot better so getting the turns over and done with as fast as possible should be priority.

I hope someone makes some smaller SS campaigns. Like just europe and north africa with 15 factions. Or just middle east similar to BC.

Most people get bored and start a new campaign once they have taken 40-60 regions anyway so i dont really see the point in 30 factions and such a huge map.

There is an Italian Civil war and a Hundred Years War campaign where there's only 3-5 factions. If you click end turn there, it's only like 1 second or something.

One thing to point out is that I believe Medieval 2 doesn't support dual or quad cores, which makes it more easier to calculate stuff. I can see that happening, especially in huge battles where the game is only using one core...

That's not too hard, just cut some areas of the map.

When I was looking for a mod that maxed out the factions and regions, I didn't find too many, except SS.

Although I may never actually play across the entire map from the tip of Iberia to the Russian Steppes (ok, my norwegian long campaign almost turned out like that...) I like the flexibility that one huge map with dozens of factions can offer.

In 6.1 I had both a long and short Norway campaign (two separate goals), I had a Venetian Mediterranean game as well as I had started an Irish game. Now I'm doing a Knights Templar game in 6.2, all with just one mod.

Having a bunch of smaller mods focusing on specific areas requires a lot of work to design and put together, and the audience may not necessarily be interested in a particular area.

Although I speak for only myself, SS is meant for those players who want something BIG!

Some people get bored when they take more than a dozen territories. Some when they make more money than they can spend. All having to do with the challenge disappearing, or less significant, and each turn eventually becoming a recruit army, attack enemy, take settlement, rinse, repeat...

If you create some goals for yourself to do certain things or follow some basic rules you might lay out for yourself, you can keep the interest going well past a certain point.

That's essentially what I think Oh and there's another thread on this - SS Poll.

Back on topic...I'v egot a core 2 duo at 2.66gz and I've forgotten my graphics card but it shouldn't affect the end turn time, and I get around 45-60 seconds.

Yes i have read just about all of them. An as i mentioned in my first post i actually found some way to marginally reduce the turn length.

But the point of this thread was not to bich about turn length or ask for tricks on reducing it. But rather to figure out why some people on less powerful machines report turn length of 1 min or less while some with powerful ones report 3 or more. If its not processing compacity that is responsible for the difference there must be some other reason that has to do with the game itself. So far the answer seems to be RR/RC, which i guess makes sense, wonder if anything can be done on PBs end to reduce this, i remember BGR causing massive turn lag, but then BYG managed to reduce it to unnoticeable amounts without sacrificing any features. Perhaps i will post in the RR thread when i get a min.

the game is single threaded, there is "no powerfull rig", unless you overclock your cpus to 4ghz or around...

Yeah, someone also mentioned earlier that having duel/quad core over a single doesn't help. In fact, if the cores of your duel/quad core were slower, individually, than the single core, you'd be running it slower assuming everything else was the same.

    4Ghz quad core.

    I win.

    Q9650 Powahhh!

Too bad in huge battles my FPS still tanks.
