    Come on now, be honest.

I know you've played TW games for hundreds and hundreds of hours... until it's 3AM and you feel bored and think "what the heck am I doing?". Like when you've eaten waaay too much chocolate and you just chew mechanically, feeling no taste. And now Napoleon is coming and you're gonna spend like another 2% of your life on it. We all know it.

Do you feel bad about wasting your life?

I don't feel bad, because I like wasting my life as I want. I think that when somebody feels bad playing TW games, then it's time to stop playing them.

I try to be reasonble in amount of time I play but sometimes a new TW game carries me away with just one more turn feeling.

I assume that before I die, someone will invent robots to maintain me indefinitely, so I don't think of it as a percentage of my life, but as the length of time I would have to wait for the improbable events of the now to occur again. Golly, if I thought I were going to die, there's no way I'd play TW! =P

I try to enjoy life in every way possible. I'm a hardstyle lover, I do wha I do.

It does feel bad to play games that are actually boring.

How is it wasting your life?

Provided you have a balanced mix of work life, social life and an active lifestyle, there's no reason why you shouldn't play these games. They're fun and challenging.

It's fun for me because it requires you to think and be strategical/tactical. Not like in some online shooters were the one who reacts the first lives.

Only really felt this way about ETW, especiallyso when the CAI was dead. But I felt it again when i realised BAI was no competition at all.

If you mean playing games in general, well there have been times I `ve felt that way. i`m an artist, and once there was a time when I was playing games more than doing my work, In fact, some games started to replace my art. When that happened I knew it was time to stop. I had this image of my tombstone saying:

`He could`ve been a great artist, but instead he was just a great gameplayer.`

That`s NOT what I want on my tombstone.

I banned myself from games for 6 months to focus on what was important. when I went back to games again i restricted myself heavily.

If I play a game it`s 1 hour a day IF i`ve done at least 8 hours of artwork. On Saturdays and sundays I might allow up to 3 hours gaming. It`s another reason why I like games to teach me something or have a little meaning in my time used.

I am also VERY strict about playing ONLINE games as they can be too addictive in a good crowd, taking over your life.

We all have a limited life.

That's a good way of doing it, Humble. I increasingly find that "gaming" is being usurped in my time by "modding", which is unfortunately

    A.) More labour-intensive
    B.) EVEN more addictive

restraint, and embrace madness. Just make sure you do it everywhere, in everything you do. Push the limits to the edge, til you allmost die -- then you wake up for real and travel to Somalia. After so, you cycle onwards to Thailand. Then you sail to Fiji, and the story goes on. (just make sure you know what you do... to some extent)

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

I do feel very guilty. Just yesterday I was going to bestow world peace on the grateful masses of the world and cure cancer before I went to bed but I played TW instead. Maybe later today I can achieve my beneficial objectives for mankind.

Humble Warrior, I wish I had your discipline. I'm studying economics at a prestigious university, but I'm far lagging behind because of my gameplaying. Which is a shame, because I know I'm intelligent and could have a bright future ahead of me if I just made an effort. I play lots of games, but particularly Company of Heroes and Total War can just swallow literally hundreds of hours that I should be using for studying. Many times I've played like 16 hours a day. And my discipline is really bad so I have a hard time restricting myself.

That's why I made this thread.
Because sometimes, especially after wasting too much time on the horrible ETW , I do feel that I'm wasting my life a bit...

Act now, m8, while you still have time. If you can`t bann yourself then write a Timetable and restrict yourself to 2 hours a day MAXIMUM. Use a stopwatch with alarm even. Tell someone else who will give you some support, I dunno, like a girlfriend or parent. Also, if you miss a project homework one day you were supposed to do, then punish yourself with no game that day.

You don`t want to blow your career, then 10 years later all you can think is "I blew my life playing stupid games". No one will remember you for how well or good you are at playing a game.

ETW is certainly not worth it, but no game is.

    Good luck.

Not really, the way I see it video games are a more engaging and arguably constructive form of entertainment than music, movies and television, which most people invest time in to different degrees. For the average gamer the advantage of sitting down to a Total War campaign is that they will almost certainly learn something about the era in question if they choose to read what's presented to them. I studied ancient history during and beyond school and I'd be lying (and arrogant) if I said that I didn't learn anything from playing through Rome: Total War. Similarly, I've learned things about the 18th and early 19th centuries from playing Empire: Total War and I've got more of a feel for them both now than I did before, plus it has inspired interest in certain areas and I've taken the time to do some further reading.

To sum up quickly, I don't really feel like I've wasted any time playing any of the games in the Total War series because - despite all the cries of historical inaccuracy - they are informative, although the extent to which they're informative really depends on the player. Anyway, if something entertains you then I don't think you could ever really consider it a pure waste of time.
