So I just finished up the series finale and I have to say this show was impressive from day one all the way through. Anyone else seen it? Is it not the very best cop show ever crafted by the hands of mortal men?
Nobody spoil season 5, I'm only 3 episodes in
I love this show, it makes every other 'cop' show look shallow and... crap. Easily one of the best TV programs ever, I think I just about prefer 'Twin Peaks' but that's about it.
I think I might watch an episode now after this...
One of the greatest TV shows ever made. Extremely authentic. I recommend you read the book that inspired it, "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" by David Simon, who produced and wrote the show.
If you ever find violence doesn't solves anything, you haven't used enough.
The Wire and The Shield are the two The show that I really need to watch. And I've found a great site to watch them from

Awesome series.
Omar, McNulty and Stringer Bell were extremely well written imo.
I watched a bit of one episode, and it kinda looked boring. Maybe I need to watch it more to find it interesting.

Indeed.
The Wire is as close to perfection as a television show has become. Bunk, Omar, and Bubbles are probably my favorite characters.

So is it finished now? How many seasons does it have, because I'm currently busy watching all of the Sopranos.

I just bought all the seasons on DVD i'm only just finished season two and i've had them for like a week but it seems amazing.
Yes, friends, governments in capitalist society are but committees of the rich to manage the affairs of the capitalist class.

Harvard is even introducing a course that will use "The Wire" as a case study for poverty in America. So yes, the show is so good that you can earn college credits at Harvard watching it (if you got the necessary SAT scores and money anyway).
David Simon is working on a new show for HBO now btw. called Treme. Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, the focus is set to be on musicians but just like The Wire you can expect it to explore all the facets and problems of New Orleans.
Was David Simon credited as creating all of the characters? I mean, I know a lot of them were based on real people, but the entire cast was so interesting with their own little traits that made you care about their situation. It certainly explains the inner-city better than anything else out there. It's much better than those inner-city gangbanger movies from the early nineties that tried to shed light on LA gangs, but make you feel sorry for the people in order to excuse their ways. The Wire doesn't excuse them, it doesn't make you feel sorry for them, but it certainly helps you understand their predicament to a much greater degree. Very insightful, especially when it expands into the politics and the education system.
The very best.
I came to it late, so I've watched most of the series back to back, which is better for keeping track of all the characters. I'm halfway through the last series at the moment. We simply don't have the budget to produce anything approaching the quality of the Wire over here. (But Jimmy Mcnulty is a Yorkshireman!)
Favourite character, Omar.
