Default Pentagon scared about Canadian quarters

Espionage warnings from the Defense Department caused an international sensation a few years ago over reports of mysterious coins with radio frequency transmitters, until they were debunked. The culprit turned out to be a commemorative quarter in Canada.
I think this really shows the sort of paranoid self-reinforcement that must be going on in the upper echelons of the American military.

"I don't think it is an issue of the Canadians being the bad guys," the Pentagon's counterintelligence chief wrote in an exchange of e-mails obtained this week by The Associated Press, "but then again, who knows."
Look at the childish thinking of the counterintelligence chief! What's with the talk of bad guys? I think I stopped using that phrase back in 6th grade.

If Canada actually succeeded in doing a espionage mission against the US, I would be really impressed with our intelligence agency....But unfortunately, this is likely simple pentagon paranoia.

    When did that happen?

I know a British force, veterans of the Peninsular Wars did so, but there were no Canadians there.

The Counter Intelligence guys are paid to be paranoid. Canada may not spy but someone can hire a Canadian to spy potentially.

America spies on Canada (and all their other "allies")
It's not so inconceivable that Canada returns the honor.

Doesn't mean there are any hostilities.

Thinking there are nanotechnology radio transmitters inside coins, because they have a protective coating on them, is just retarded though.
But remember these are the same idiots who fabricated stories about WMD's in Iraq.

Well, technically a large portion of those (british) soldiers where originally recruited from Canada. as per british policy including colonial soldiers.

Let's just hope they were fascist communist kittens who were on their way to international fascist communist fair.

The British force that captured Washington were soldiers from the Peninsular War supported by a few colonials (notably Colonial Marines who comprised of many ex-slaves). There may well have been Canadians present within the ranks but they weren't a "large portion", and certainly not the majority.

They suspected the Canadians of putting nanotechnology into commerorative quarters in order to gather intelligence against the US, and you think they're being sensible? What's next, suspected French UFOs violating US airspace? Beaming Maltese Commando units into Area 51?

If Canada took offensive action against the US it would pretty much represent the Canadian government saying "We don't want to run our country any more, let's go out in style!". The Pentagon is just being paranoid...

I dunno. If you live in canada too long you forget the national anthem and instead sing songs about your favourite hockey team .
And you start to think that hitting people over the head with a stick is actually a really good idea.

Oh gosh. Hilariously interesting to see those that have know idea what they're talking about make jokes about Pentagon's paranoia. It might be an Earth-shattering realization for many of you, but allies spy on each other all the time. Israel, for instance, is considered to be one of the most aggressive intelligence gatherers against the United States, despite our almost un-relenting support of them. Odd? No. Countries spy on each other whether they are friends or not. Seriously folks, you have a tenuous grasp on the real world of foreign relations it would seem. The Pentagon isn't being paranoid.

To be honest it would be rather silly half the time to spy on your enemies.
It tends to abunduntly clear what your enemies will do in this day and age , Anything major like a war is going to be covered by the media anyway , so why bother? Its not like you need spies to tell how say, Iran is going to vote on the next major UN resoloution on nuclear weapons.
Spies are most needed for the people who you dont know about, Usually the people who are neither your enemies nor your friends. Alternatively its nice to keep tabs on EVERYTHING/EVERYONE if possible, but usually spy agencies are limited in this respect.
