    Default Atheists and Life

Life is the greatest gift a person has and it should be used to the fullest. For atheists, this is especially true, as according to a friend of mine "It's your only shot". Yet despite the conviction I see from atheists that this is the only life your going to get, I never see any resolve to make it worth living. The friend I quoted earlier spends his days smoking pot every time his parent's backs are turned and is flunking. My uncle, another atheist, has spent his life working as a cashier and living with his mom. My point is, why do atheists seemingly have no regard for such an important part of their beliefs?

Just a disclaimer, I do not condone the religious wasting life either, seeing as life is perhaps the greatest gift God will ever give you aside from his love.

The difference is that to an atheist he decides what 'living his life to the fullest' means. If that means he gets to sit back and smoke pot all the time, so be it.

    Pretty much this.

And couple it with perhaps wanting to, but not being able to do more. An adventure filled life filled with extra-ordinary experiences doesn't just depend on your desire to experience it. Most obviously, you need money.

Besides, not all atheists think life is so great as well. Atheists only have their atheism in common.

I see these religious people blowing themselves up, setting themselves on fire or executing other people and I keep thinking have religious people no regard for life?

They can't possible have any regard for life considering how little regard they show for it.

Denny it's not like the majority of religious folk are blowing themselves up, or setting fire to the world they are over 3 billion practioners of the abrahamic religion alone, knowing that when you discuss faith you are probably refering to those guys.
So it's not like they have no regaurd for life, it may be true for some people but not all, not even most.

And it's not like we Atheist all appreciate life...they are many of us who don't.
I wear the chain I forged in life, I made it link by link and yard by yard. Is it's pattern strange to you? How would you know of length of the strong coil you bear yourself? It was as full, as heavy, and as long as this seven christmas eve's ago, you have labored on it since, it's a ponderous chain!

My sarcasm was a refferal to the fact that the poster seemed to think that because he knows an atheist who smokes pot all day then atheists don't have regard for life, ergo if suicide bombers or abortion clinic shooters exist in religion the religious people have no regard for life.

It is horrendous logic... perhaps I was a touch obscure in pointing it out.

Pardon, I meant to put "so many atheists".

My original argument, I've come to realize is illogical, as pointed out by Dr.Zoidberg and Gaidin, so this thread may be closed.

You're under the assumption that atheism is a set of beliefs, in the same vain as religious belief system. Atheism is the absence of belief in the existence of deities.

How an atheist chooses to live their life, and what they see as a meaningful life can be completely separate to their adherence to atheism. In your friends case, it appears that he has tied his adherence to atheism to his life goals/values.

It's always possible that reincarnation or an afterlife exist, but without knowing for sure, I'm determined to make the most of the life I know I have.

You have a good point there about atheism being only the abscense of beliefs. What would the philosophy of making the best out of your life be called?
