I encountered it too, but I believe the host went a little further and said "no phalanx factions". Think about what factions you would have left if this were a real rule:

    - the four roman factions
    - Parthia
    - Scythia
    - Gaul
    - Britain
    - Spain
    - Numidia
    - Dacia

Would you really want to play the game with only these factions?

Yea that is really pathetic, i can understand banning elephants and artillery. But banning factions is just lame. I had a guy in Med2, who thought Spain and Portugal were overpowered so he banned them from his games....

(I'm playing against the game's host, who is losing badly)

    Host: I win
(He quits and the game ends)

I joined a game on the grassy flats and my opponent went Julii so I went Scipi and he said "you have to be Gaul to fight me"

Is it bad if someone forms a n00b box as a last stand? I mean does that make them a n00b, even if they didn't use it at first?

A noob box is not a good OPENING strategy as it eliminates all possibilities of taking the initiative and it makes you very vulnerable to archer fire while limiting your ability to fire back.
If you only have infantry left it is a viable option but then its not called a noob box but a porcupine..

Porcupine is an effective tactic when lets say 3 or 4 half dead units of sacred band are surrounded by 6 Barbarian Warlord chariots and some out of ammo head hurlers and slingers.

thats only nooby when you hide a lot of units like almost your entire army. When you just hide a couple its fine

weet. Because if it was n00bish, then I would've said that Marcus Crassus was a n00b at Carrhae.
