Well, it depends on my mood. I might love one song now, and not care for it an hour later. But here's some songs that come to mind when I think of my favorites. Very rough and very loosely-ordered.

    1. A Day in the Life - the Beatles
    2. Gimme Shelter - the Rolling Stones
    3. To Ramona - Bob Dylan
    4. Castles Made of Sand - Jimi Hendrix
    5. Strawberry Fields Forever - the Beatles
    6. Alameda - Elliott Smith
    7. White Room - Cream
    8. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
    9. Lithium - Nirvana
    10. Tomorrow Never Knows - the Beatles
    11. Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix Experience
    12. Sympathy for the Devil - the Rolling Stones
    13. Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
    14. 3rd Planet - Modest Mouse
    15. Nude - Radiohead
    16. My Body is a Cage - Arcade Fire
    17. All Apologies - Nirvana
    18. Memory Lane - Elliott Smith
    19. Debaser - the Pixies
    20. Still Fighting It - Ben Folds

EDIT: Should also add "Love" by John Lennon. I don't know where that would fit in, but it popped into my head and I thought I should add it.

Summing up the broad spectrum of my musical experience and condensing that down to 20 songs sounds like a very difficult task ... but I'll give it a shot. I think this list doesn't really represent what I listen to now, but more my nod to musical history with a few modern bands thrown in.

    1. Lateralus - Tool
    2. A Day in the Life - The Beatles
    3. Time - Pink Floyd
    4. Across the Universe - The Beatles
    5. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
    6. Working Class Hero - John Lennon
    7. Let It Be - The Beatles
    8. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
    9. Creep - Radiohead
    10. Imagine - John Lennon
    11. Hotel California - The Eagles
    12. Vicarious - Tool
    13. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles
    14. All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
    15. Aenema - Tool
    16. Everlong - Foo Fighters
    17. The Bends - Radiohead
    18. Dream On - Aerosmith
    19. 10,000 Days - Tool
    20. Aerials - System of a Down

Of those bands, only about 5 songs are so are ones I've listened to recently, but the rest are some of the best songs known to man. No mistake The Beatles have so many of them.

    love your list so much

as for me, god my music tastes bounce around too wildly for me to be set on anything. I'd probably wanna change it by the time I typed it all up, then I'd spend 30 mins looking for the perfect list, then I'd just get frustrated and close the browser. so yea

Well it's impossible for me to put a real order, but I would say, an approximate list right now would be:

    1. A Day In The Life, The Beatles (Those orchestra parts are just friggin awesome, right!?!?)
    2. Born To Run, Bruce Springsteen
    3. Mississippi, Bob Dylan
    4. Back in the U.S.S.R, The Beatles
    5. Monkey Man, The Rolling Stones
    6. Ventilator Blues, The Rolling Stones
    7. Oh! Darling, The Beatles
    8. Working On The Highway, Bruce Springsteen
    9. Run Through The Jungle, Creedence Clearwater Revival
    10. Ticket To Ride, The Beatles
    11. Within You Without You, The Beatles
    12. Desolation Row, Bob Dylan
    13. Drive All Night, Bruce Springsteen
    14. I Want You (She's So Heavy), The Beatles
    15. The Long and Winding Road, The Beatles
    16. Octopus's Garden, The Beatles
    17. She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, The Beatles
    18. Something, The Beatles
    19. Meeting Across The River, Bruce Springsteen
    20. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), Bruce Springsteen

Some I picked because I've listened alot to them recently (like Mississippi), others are unforgettable classics (like Rosalita). As a whole, I can say that I listen to The Beatles ALOT right now, since I got the new stereo box. (Which is, btw, awesome). Some songs were omitted but could easily be put in, like, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

(as a 21. I'd like to add Taxman, The Beatles. I just can't leave that one out!)

"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."

I would NEVER go so far as to say that about her any more than I would have said that about Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera or any other shallow pop whore who makes their fortune on club songs.

I hardly think that Poker Face, with such rousing lyrics as:
Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh
I'll get him hot, show him what I've got
Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh

    (Mum mum mum mah)
    P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face

Would ever qualify as the anthem of a generation or be made by someone with a modicum of talent.

Nor would a song whose refrain is "ga ga ooh rah rah".
