I don't think that we all would have had much choice - so most probably either for your "home faction" or for the army coming along and forcing you, at sword's point, to fight for them.
But if you ask about a free choice, I seriously doubt that I'd have picked up arms for some king's selfish interests. The most "modern" choice, though, would have been the Swiss Confederation...
