    Default Patch 4

Just to let you know that Patch 4 should be released fairly soon.

This patch will contain the revised Gothic and Germanic faction skins and unit types as previously mentioned in the Patch 3 thread.

Unit types will better reflect the 4th C period. This means that most barbarian troops will be armed with a throwing weapon and thrusting spear. Only more heavily armed and noble troops will have swords. I have also introduced a few different warband types to reflect the diversity. Some units will be unarmoured, while others will be unarmoured but have a helmet. There will be a unit which has chainmail as well as a unit which has captured roman armour. This should reflect the diversity that a warband had. I've had a few battles with this and the combination of seeing the more heavily armed or elite units in the front followed by the lesser armed troops looks really authentic.

The Patch will also alter recruting for barbarian factions, so that their base recruiting will remain within the vicinity of their own homelands on the whole, but will be able to recruit some roman troops based on the roman recruiting system.

For example, the Alemanni will be able to recruit their own troops within their own German lands as well as in Gaul and Illyricum but not in Spain, Britain, Africa, Italy etc, BUT will be able to recruit roman milites, comitatensis and equites units.

This will make things a bit more difficult for the germanic/gothic factions but will mean that they will need to recruit more roman troops as they go deeper into the empire, which is something that they would have to do. The recruitment of roman troops can also represent the fully arming of those tribes with roman equipment.

In addition, there will some changes to the campaign scripts to allow cash bonuses for taking imperial cities as well as an optional Forced Diplomacy script for those who like that sort of thing.

This patch will be the penultimate release.

The Patch is ready. Please follow the link to the download page:

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=126462

    EDIT:

Some existing units have been removed in order to expand the number of different warrbands. This should not cause any CTDs and should be savedgame compatible, but you may receive a world creation error when you exist from your saved game, but only once. When you load your campaign again there should be no error message.

Also, PLEASE NOTE: The Patch has the 361AD Campaign with Full Script and Vanilla Soundmod as the default. You will need to reload your particular campaign and soundmod before proceeding with your current campaign.

And finally, thanks to florin80, leif_erikson, razor and the team from the "The Fall of Rome" mod for allowing me to use/edit their skins and textures. Much appreciated.

    Cheers

So hang on, the barbarians will be able to recruit Roman Comitanesis? With roman officers? does that count the more elite legions (Who's name escapes me, the ones that start off in Julian's army that you have to march across the empire to be retrained) or just the 'normal' comitatii?
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
What have the Romans ever done for us?? apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order... what have the Romans done for us?

    Yes, but not Palatinae units.

Not sure of the evidence of even Gothic leaders recruiting 'Roman' legiones, Auxilia, Equites units etc in any great numbers, or for anything other than short periods. We know that even when they did, the 'barbarians' tended to then recruit from their own nationality in preference as the Roman's just could not be trusted not to desert. That's not to say that various 'barbarian' leaders did not aspired to become Patrician, or even Emperor, that was one of the reasons why Alaric went on the rampage, he was refused the Roman title he asked for, and perhaps should have been given.

I am not aware of Allemanic, Frankish, Quadic, Sarmatian tribes recruiting Roman's either, in fact, the evidence would suggest that they much preferred their own nationalities.

But, I'm open to evidence to the contrary.

VV, I do agree with you but IB mods do allow a certain degree of gameplay "what ifs", especially if any faction gains another factions territory. The same applies if the romans capture enemy territory it will allow their recruitment roster to include some of the "local talent". Inthe case of recruiting roman troops, they are restricted to the normal roman recruitng areas.

I acknowledge that there is no real evidence for this, it is really about giving players the choice to decide, especially when the mod can go up to 600AD.

This could lead to a VERY powerful hun empire. However, I'm happy as long as the sassies can't get legions. Why not make the barbarian buildings change into their Roman equivalents when they capture a certain ammount of Roman cities? That'll stop weird thatched roof buildings showing up in an otherwise civilised town.

I'd love to hear it. But seriously, I am in the process of checking that all the correct files and UI Cards are in place, then all I have to do is package it up and upload it, so hopefully in the next couple of days.

    Thanks for your patience.

Does this new patch enhance the mod stability?

In my first year or so of the Julian campaign I fought 12 battles, 6 of those crashed while returning to the campaign map. Having to refight battles and being forced to use the awful autoresolve has really drained my enjoyment of this mod.

You need to look at the thread on battle CTD's which gives advise on this. Basically, you need to wait up to 30 seconds before existing the battle and going back to the campaign map.

If you follow this advice the battle CTD's should be greatly eliminated.

    Cheers
