Default XC-ET Joint Expansion Project: Intellectual Lifes, Spiritual Journeys

I have came up with ideas about development of Special feature which will made XC even more uniquely different from our elder brother work, XGM, for a while but have just became concrete recently. I will put reformation on religion and intellectual concepts to the place where XGM could not go. But I need a lot of help from fellows and forumer who adept in history and ancient culture or researcher on the topic about religion intellectual culture and ancients' superstitious/omens to made concept and description great. So I ask Caesar to allow me to open this thread to public discussion.

Plan on this so far (and maybe add furthers)
    1) Temple and religion concept revision
    - Cut down temple numbers and redefined concept of the rests as most people don't understand the different among temples with law bonus and among temples with exp bonus. I expected to left about 15 but fewer would also good.
    - Redefined deity in connected with temples as well as ancillaries
    - New traits system about how religions effect personal development by expand more world religion concept as well as add deity devotion and Mystery cults concept which will expand personal development of characters greatly both vice and virtue which determine by hidden traits about how characters opinion about religion.
    - Omens system, add random factors to each turn event as well as add character/faction quest if player like to pursue to solved bad bad problem that happen to them.

    2) Intellectual skills concept revision
    - New Intellectual skills system which made all culture different as well as add more skill in stocks.
    - Expand more on partial civilized factions concept by give them access to more of civilized traits and features especially for Spain and Thrace

    Optional: New Economy
    - New spare slots will go for new buildings but still need to see what in non beta XC4 work and feedback to discuss what need to add. Ideas so far are trans-sahara trade, Frankincense route, river port, hospital, and garden paradise. All of these not finalized yet.

    Part 1: Religious Buildings
Current XC has inherited 20 temple types from XGM, which most people seem to not understand the different between each kind of temples at all and wasted so many precious building slots those could use for other proposes to serve our ambitious project. I currently plan to cut our temple from 20 to 15 for this combined project but if it better to cut more then so be it.

[] Temple could be build by that factions initially. Usually 3 but if that factions are thallasocratic, Parthia or Baktria will give 4
    () Need description
    * Need to decide which deity is better

Concept of how to create faction's temple set
    1) There will usually has 3 but not more than 4 temple in set.
    2) Could only pick 1 per category
    3) could not pick the same type with their main neighbor
    4) Temple of Trade, Naval, and Ascetic are mutually excluded except for Carthage.
    5) Temple of Law, Leadership, and One God are mutually excluded

Part 2: New Faith and Religion system
    1) Religious behavior will affected by...
    - personality via trait, people will choose where their faith reside to according to family value and their own personality.
    - devoting hidden trait, sliding scale on devotional tendency of character toward religion the more this value higher, the more tendency to be fanatic
    - Spiritual searching hidden trait, sliding scale on what they seen on their spiritual and ultimate truth questioning, higher mean that they will not affect by bad trait from temple and question most of devotiobn but will go deeper into developed themselves by estoric religions and mystery cults instead.
    - publicfaith and pious will give more chance to gain trait from temple
    - pragmatic and atheism will prevent chance to gain trait from non-Ascetic temple
    - some trait gain by temple need to have superstitious trait

    2) Devotion to deity, most of deity could be devoted by general as follower, all have 3 levels each, trigger when upgrade temple or stay in settlement with temple and right colony or inherit from father.
lvl1: faithful, first step of devotion, prevent devotion on other gods and affect of different temple from their faithful deity.
lvl2: devotion, second step with additional bonus
lvl3: fanatic, third step with bonus plus unrest when governing settlement with different temple from their devotion, sane character will not become fanatic

    3) Faith based religion, Jedaism and Zoroastrian, as faith based monotheistic religion will have different kind of system from polythistic religion as they will have subcults that based on cultural development of that era.
Zoroastrian has 3 level of devotion plus supplement cults...
    - Polytheistic systhesis Zoroastrain cult
    - Apocalyptic Zoroastrian cults
    - Zurvanism(Cults that devote to Zurvan the primodial creator and father of Ahura Mazda and Ahriman in later helleno-zoroastrian sect)
    - Median Magii cults
    - Mithra's Devotion cult(also allowed even without Zoroastrian faith)
    - Anahita's Devotion cult(also allowed even without Zoroastrian faith)

Judaism didn't have seperated religion trait as it share with ethnic Jewish but have religion aspect plus by supplement sect...
    - Apocalyptic sect
    - Messianic sect
    - Hellenistic Judaism

    4) Hybrid Religion, Hinduism is religion with hybrid tradition between verdic ritual devotion tradition and more recent upanishad tradition
    - Verdic devotion tradition, will allowed these devotion
    The Ashvins
    Agni
    Shiva
    Surya
    Soma
    Brahma
    Indra
    Vishnu
    - Upanishad tradition, trigger when spiritual searching trait is at high level and will allowed these esotoric practice
    Ayuraveda (The Ashvins)
    Bhagavad Gita (Vishnu)
    Brahman Vedanta (Brahma)
    Yoga (Shiva)

    5) Mystery & esotoric Religion, Faith faith that devotion to mystery, esoteric and ascetic only. Need consider about of soul searching to initiate and a lot of spiritual searching and effort to develop further, the cults itself will prevent devotion on any gods as well as most of trait related to temple.
    Just modify old traits
    - Buddhism
    Newly Add
    - Orphic Mysteries
    - Wodanic Cults
    - Cults of Zalmoxis
    - Bacchic Cults
    - Dionysian Mysteries
    - Cults of Cernunnos(Druid)
    - Isis Mysteries
    - Eleusinian Mysteries
    - Cults of Sabazios
    - Cults of Cybele
    - Cults of Endovilicus
    - Cults of Asklepios
Note: Follower of Pythagorean and Platonism will not buy with most of Cults and mysteries but may still have chance for Buddhism

    6) Cult of Leadership
    - Alexander Cults
    - Imperial Cults (if Rome has an leader as imperator will allowed this cult to appear)
    - Diadochus Cults

    7) Barbarian Priest Traits, rebalance
Zalmoxis and Druidic cults have very powerful organized body of Priesthood. And character would able to access to these if they graduated from specific schools since in ET3.
    - Priest of Zalmoxis (Graduated from Kogainon)
    - Druid (Graduated from Anglesey or Cenabum)

    8) Hate specific religion and cults
As character could faithful to religion and cults, they would also hate other faith and deity as well.

In-depth discussion as well as researcher on these topics are needed.

    Part 3: Omen System
    Brief on Omen System
Omen system is the system to put random factor and quest of redeem into action. Effects are varied according to type of omens...

    - Faction omens: This Omens will belong to faction leader and effect will fall on shoulders of all people who served in factions. This omens usually have bad effect on whole family due to its existance demage credibility of whole family. This omens will not affect on ai factions. The sequence of this omens often like this...
    1) Omens stuck with faction annoucement about omens on faction leaders as well as informed on which oracle that he need to consult on this matter by himself. And then penalty effect start.
    2) Faction leader need to go to settlement with specific oracle by himself to get solution, oracle that chosen usually within faction border but in some case, may not if no oracle in border but near your starting position. If player forget instruction, trait will remind you this.
    3) Do it according to solution pass down by Oracle which often need to do something in foreign settlement and need to go to war with those factions to to do it.
    4) If player could do it then all penalty will vanish as well as some handsome reward to faction leader.
    5) Effect of faction Omen will also end if current faction leader is dead.

    - Personal omens: Similar to faction omens except that this will be personal matters and usually no need to take foreign settlement but still need to fulfill something. Reward will be spawning some good trait or redeem the bad one that already have. If you don't do it effect that follow this character will varied but usually not factionwide. Character with pragmatic belief will not able to take this quest.

    - Battle omens: This is omens that will issue at the start turn and end of battle and effect on next battle. This omens happen randomly and usually something about personal luck of generals which sometime fatal. Again, character with pragmatic belief or certain traits will not effect on the omens no matter it is good or bad.

    - Siege omens: Similar to Battle omens but happen to siege and besieged character only. It is issue only at start turn. This omens will effect on how tough the siege battle is or reward to come until next turn. Again, character with pragmatic belief or certain traits will not effect on the omens no matter it is good or bad.

Currently I and Anakarsis are on researching in order to create good omen scenarios.

    To be continue....

You gonna make this only with character traits? It´s incredible how do you expanded the limits of the program.

I would have put the farming temple among the economica ones, but apart from this, the resume of the divine aspects is outstanding.

FOr this level of accuracy, In my opinion, Stoic and Epicurean phylosophies should have the same level of development and influence than a religion , as historically they were much more ruling on the religious deveanor of the rulers than cults.

OK. I would do that. although stoicism and epicurean already have their own trait of personality and trait of philosophy. I will try to formulate and expand their affection to all others philosophy schools as well.

Yes, i already have seen them in game. But as you plan to take this all to a completely new level of accuracy, that could do a nice detail.

I though that putting something about the neo-platonic and gnostic cults (Christianity among them) should be also good, but they appear in the limit of our time period so it is not that important,

I like it. If you need any help with the info then give me a PM but, as for the system, that's not really my area.

In my opinion, separating the Frankincense from the Silk road is not SO important. The rest of the buildings are welcome

River trade is a definate bonus.. I always try at least one useful Ancilliary or trait per Temple,ie Fertility I added "WiseWoman' in vanilla. I do not know how it works out here? Morale bonus does not work,I can confirm this,so hope not to include with your temples. Hospitals I find good reference in MTW2 for a guide.

Good work with your temple system..

If you were going to cut down the number of those special temples, I would prefer to see this kind of combination, because surely Athens and Rome are very essential cities in this game.

The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world.

    http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/404
    1. victory, Acropolis
    2. forge, Capitoline Temple (the greatest temple in Ancient Rome)
    3. fun, Theban Necropolis (inc. the Valley of the Kings)
    4. trade, Tophet
    5. hunting, Temple of Anahita
    6. farming, Stonehenge
    7. fertility, Carnac Stones
    8. healing, Paradise at Daphne
    9. leadership, Persepolis
    10. naval, Pillars of Herakles
    11. one god, Second Temple of Yahweh
    12. ascetic, Learning Centre of Taxila
    As oracles:
    1. Oracle of Dodona (old governors sp)
    2. Oracle of Amon (old victory sp)
    3. Oracle of Delphi (old fun sp)
If the number of the special temples were cut down, then I would prefer to remove these temples:
    • Abu Simbel (violence)
    • Karahunj (horse)
    • Kogaionon (law)
    • Sanctuary of Asklepios

About those various oracles, one thing that came to my mind is Sibyl of Cumae and the Sibylline Books:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ageless Cumaean Sibyl was the priestess presiding over the Apollonian oracle at Cumae (Kyme), a Greek colony located in the Italian region of Campania.

Virgil, in his Aeneid, describes the Cumaean Sibyl thus: "She changes her features and the colour of her countenance; her hair springs up erect, her bosom heaves and pants, her wild heart beats violently, the foam gathers on her lips, and her voice is terrible." In addition, when she was possessed, Virgil added, "She paces to and fro in her cave and gesticulates as if she would expel the gods from her breast."

One of the Cumaean Sibyl's peculiarities, moreover, was that when consulted she would write her predictions on oak leaves and lay them at the edge of her cave, from which they were blown hither and yon by the wind and often confusedly mixed up, making them all but unintelligible to their readers. The Cumaean Sibyl, declared one historian, never sat on her tripod to give answers without first swallowing a few drops of the juice of the bay laurel.

The Sibylline Books or Libri Sibyllini were a collection of oracular utterances, set out in Greek hexameters, purchased from a sibyl by the last king of Rome, Tarquinius Superbus, and consulted at momentous crises through the history of the Republic and the Empire. Those books were carefully preserved until the disastrous fire, which incinerated the Capitol in 83 BCE. After that disaster, the Roman Senate sent envoys to various oracles to collect similar prophecies, assembling a collection that survived for several centuries until Stilicho reportedly destroyed it in 405 CE.

If we cut down on temples, we will likely devote a building tree or two to special temples.

Expand your borders, a mod based on XGM 5.

Way to be suppanut, good work on your traits and supply system. This idea has so many possibilities. Yesterday I read this post and what you were planning and it got me thinking about temples. The Temple of Yahweh in particular. In a campaign I wanted to relocate my capital to Jerusalem. What effect could that have on my faction's culture overall? Maybe if I keep my general's in Jerusalem long enough they would develop a trait such as ''Adopted Judaic customs'', ''Influenced by the Jews'', ''hates the Egyptians''. Or they were effected by the temple of Yahweh and were given a trait ''Follower of Yahweh'', ''shuns false gods'', and ''dislikes idol worship''. The monotheistic view sounds like a really cool idea suppanut. The coming of age family members that spend their three years at the academy or place of higher learning in Jerusalem will graduate with deeper trait's such as ''Hebrew Study Skill'', ''Rabbi tutor'', ''speaks Hebrew'', and ''studies Hebrew texts''. It would be nice if even only the young coming of age family members that were schooled in Jerusalem, received special traits for growing up, and for being educated and influenced in the location of Jerusalem, the temple of Yahweh, the academy, and a building made for the further study of religion all combined in the city of Jerusalem. Only then will the family member gain these special influential traits aside from those that weren't. Further more I have two question's please.

1.Can Rome build a coliseum? For some reason I'm thinking that was in vanilla rtw because they could recruit gladiators what ever happened to that? I think it would be cool to be able to build a huge coliseum in Rome and host shows monthly or whatever to keep the people happy, and train those gladiator units that I don't see anymore.

2.In this present version of xc can I build the temple of Yahweh in any other place besides Jerusalem? So I can rid the other nations of their false gods and spread the good word by force

    thanx guys

I must apologize that I could not follow this suggestion due to...

    1. No one will able to build temple of Yahweh outside Jerusalem as at that time Jewish have doctrine that Temple of Yahweh must have only one and must in Jerusalem only or else will be Blasphemous.

    2. Judaism was and even now still very exclusive religions. they didn't seek convert from people outsider except marriage, but they rarely did this in the past due to their idea about their exclusiveness, but yet convert also possible. First abrahamic religion that actively seek proselyting outsider is christianity, and this doctrine developed by Paul of Tarsus, aka St. Paul, who was hellenistic jew by definition.

    3. Synagogue isn't temple by definition, it was like club where jewish people in diaspora gather and discuss all topic in antiquity, And Rabbi still very new thing in Jewish society at that time. Rabbi also not priest, as priest only in Temple of Solomon, but they were sage in jewish society. Religious role of Synagogues and Rabbis come only after destruction of second temple by roman but formalized only after 200 AD

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbi

    4. At that time, other than Jewish, there also other religion that also monothism, Zoroastrianism and it is only temple for Parthia faction. If you like to proselyting the world then you should play Parthia, although they were not serious about smash idols until time of Sassanid.

Gladiators are Rebel only's units in XC4. And Gladiator historically came from Gladiatorial schools not from Coliseum. Place that famous for gladiatorial schools were Tripolitania in North Africa and Campania in Southern Italy.

2.In this present version of xc can I build the temple of Yahweh in any other place besides Jerusalem? So I can rid the other nations of their false gods and spread the good word by force

    thanx guys
Current version, If Saba upgrade temple of one god, like Zarathustra, then it will end up turn into temple of Yahweh.

That's true it was and still is an exclusive religion/club but like you said there is a possibility of convert. Also I looked at every middle eastern factions temples and the only temple dedicated to one creator is the Armenian temple of Aramazd which is similar to Zeus. Saba had no such temple called Zarathustra and the Persian temples were all dedicated to the Mazda god.

What Suppanut is trying to say is that Parthia and Saba are the only Factions who have the temple of one god in this game. If the Parthians have built the temple of Ahura Madza, and you are playing the Sabaean Faction, then there is a chance to upgrade it to the temple of Yahweh. We added this option for Saba as the closest "relative" to the Jewish people with the limits of this game. Besides "the second temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem" is one of the special buildings that are adding some historical details and accuracy to this game.

Here you can find the basic structure of the Sabaean temple system:

As we know there were already strong Jewish communities outside Israel during the Hellenistic Era (e.g. Alexandria, Antioch and Babylonia), but the temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem remained the central place in Jewish religion until the Romans detroyed it in 70 CE, and it started the diaspora that changed the nature of Judaism permanently.
