Default Gamebreaking Bug in RTR, Please help!

OK, i enjoy RTR very much, but i have never been able to control a quarter of the regions in the campaign map because i get so frustrated at a bug that makes the game crash that now im almost contemplating to uninstall.

When im besieging a city, I besiege the city without making any siege equipment, and wait until the enemy can no longer hold out, after which they will either sally out or just be destroyed, allowing me to occupy, exterminate, etc. No crash happens here, this is fine.

This game crash happens in the following scenario ( and im almost certain about this).

However, in the event that the previously mentioned situation occurs, (besieging a city until they can no longer hold out), the AI will almost certainly respond in the following manner: When the turns remaining before the siege is successful begins to get low, the AI will move troops to the city in question, and attack the besieging army (though the attack often occurs on the sieges last turn). Because the battle was initiated against an army outside the city, the battlemap used is not the city, but a standard battlemap where the army that was inside the besieged city arrives as reinforcements. The battle ensues, and the player is victorious. However, in order to eliminate potential threats, the battle is continued until as many enemy troops as possible are killed, thus making the AI's reinforcing army rout on the campaign map. Also, the of troops from the besieged army that arrived in the battle as reinforcements are also pursued and destroyed, leaving no troops left withing the city in question. Following the battle, because all enemy troops were annihilated, the siege automatically ends, and lets me take the city. However, And It Is At THIS point, when selecting the options occupy/enslave/exterminate, the game will crash. Although i choose exterminate 99% of the time.

Very rarely, this scenario will NOT result in a crash. But because of my frequent habit of not taking a city by force, and often setting up this scenario, RTR crashes almost every 15 minutes or so.

The most frustrating occurrence of this occurred not to me, but i believe to an AI. I believe this because after ending my turn, every time the game would begin the Carthaginian turn, the game would crash, and nothing that i could do could avert this. The game was simply broken and could not be continued.

If it is at all possible for me to type something in the console to watch specifically for this crash error, i will do so. Otherwise i cannot help but to stop playing RTR until this issue is resolved.

I hope to hear from someone that could help me resolve this problem. Thanks.

It`s a common rtw thing. It`s been reported for all mods that I know and the vanilla game too. The current theory is that it is a retreating bug for the Ai and that can`t truly be fixed by modders. Basically, when you besiege a settlement your army stands on the tile outside the city. And if another ai army attacks your besieging army, the garrison will join that attack. But the battle is played on the tile outside the settlement. Which means the besieged army then has to retreat. And it seems that`s where the bug is. Even if you manage to destroy(completely) the garrison and are presented with the options to take the city it will still happen. The only thing to do modding wise would be to have as few obstacles around a settlement as possible, but there`s no exact science in this regard. The only thing to do as a player is to avoid fighting reinforcement armies when sieging a city, especially if it`s being flanked by rivers or impassible terrain. If you deal with the reinforcements separately and then fight just the garrison the battle will be played on the tile of the settlement and you should have no problems.

There`s a longer thread on this here btw if you want to read the entire discussion:

About the carthaginian turn crash. Do you have the revolt ctd fix installed? It also fixes a bug with the carthaginian navy recruitment.

    Thanks
