Dont get into a fight if there is nothing to win
And if you're in the US you've got a long holiday weekend, so no excuses about not having enough time to play
[In my Roman campaign I've got Italy, the Carthaginian lands in northeast Africa, and half of Gaul, but I still have to fight the Massyli and Epirotes, and then kick the various warring remnants out of Sicily and Iberia. And I like fighting the battles too much to auto-resolve them, so it'll be a while yet]
I still have all of Iberia but Emporion and all of Africa but Carthage yet to conquer as Rome![]()

in some cases....the victory conditions dont seem to make sense....Carthage for example. Why would they want to conquer Epirus or Cispaline Gaul? Conquering Iberia, Rome, Massylia, and Sicily make sense though....
The victory conditions are about dominance in the western Mediterranean - in order to achieve them, you have to have pretty well dominated each faction. Makes sense to me.
Reading the victory message I realize that it's probably from RTW vanilla victory message. Small issue but not really approriate for FOE I think. Maybe someone could write up new victory messages base on FOE situation that make winning the game really, really, really feels satisfying.

I'm finding Carthage to be quite reasonable on H/M, once I followed the advice to disband all units with high upkeep. Punic War Chariots, Carthaginian Cavalry, half my fleets, even the Sacred Band - all gone
Instead I went on the defensive for a few years, keeping just enough mercenaries in Sicily to hold the cities. I used the money saved to jump-start my economy, and gradually recruited silver-chevron Liby-Phoenician Hoplites and Punic Peltasts from Carthago. Together with some Numidian Infantry from Utica and my original Balearic slingers, this was the army that conquered all of Africa. My historical reasoning is "what would have happened if Carthage stopped using so many mercenaries and got serious about training its own infantry?"
Of course, then I got greedy and expanded a little in Iberia, and a little in Sicily, and then I had to punish the High Iberians for trying to grab the Balearic Islands from me, and suddenly I was fighting pretty much everyone else without enough generals to go round. But things are stable now, my economy is doing well, the colonies are loving their new master, and I've brought the Sacred Band back to stomp their way through Sicily
Edit: And congratulations on your win!

Iberia... Before the Autonomoi Dynastai get too strong![]()
Make sure you have a counter for Iberian Elite Scutarii! All the factions in Iberia seem to love them, missiles bounce off them, and they take a loooong time to die in melee. I recruited some of my own, and brought extra cavalry for hammer-and-anvil tactics. I've also had to put up with a constant stream of Dynastai assassins. None of my Iberian generals have actually gotten full-blown paranoia yet, but they're all watchful and untrusting
Personally I'd recommend taking out the Massyli first, and then expanding out to cover the whole of Africa. That will give you a secure home front, so you can reduce your garrisons and put more troops on the frontline. Stay on the defensive elsewhere and try to be at peace with as many factions as possible, to postpone the inevitable attacks. You may have to choose to give up your toe-holds on either Iberia or Sicily. I wouldn't bother with Corsica and Sardinia, just keep a spy there and spread unrest after the Romans grab them. In my game the Romans quickly grabbed Corsica and then left their faction leader there to keep the peace. Once he died of old age, my spy nipped into town, and the island revolted back to me the next season![]()
I'm playing as Carthage as well, glad someone finally had the sense(that i've seen) to disband those chariots...i mean they are overpriced horse archers that can't charge and are very stupid.
However your tactics differed to mine. I played defensive for a little but i immediately captured agrigento and then really did nothing...just stablilise my economy...and make 2 ampaign armies to deal with those pesky numidians and take sicily. By 272bc i had ripled massylia and i had syracuse undersiege for the 2nd time-this time with no pyhrrus of epirus to save them(i killed him and his asian eles at a field in sight of syracuse). Before i gave it a rest and played RTRPE again i was finishing massylia, trying to fund a campaign army to finish syracuse and march into iberia. I had managed to keep hold of my holdings.
I never got rid of my sacreds...they are damn useful and impossible units to fight. As massylia(first campaign just to see what it was like) and those sacreds broke 4 numid inf with 40 losses, despite the fact i charged their rear and pouned it with javs and arrows. I didn't disband much, only 1/2 my fleet and those damn chariots plus a few unnesecary garrison units.
Iberians have good troops...those elite scutarii are good...haven't seen too many assassins though.
The romans have nabbed corsia 4 times...i got it back again inside 4 turns via revolt each time.
In my campaign (265 BC) the Romans are still trying to kick Pyrrhus out of Italy. They send in three or four fresh infantry units at a time, and the Epirote army chops them up, but gets worn down a little more in doing so. Very historical! Pyrrhus only has a half-stack of remnants left, with 5-10 men in each unit, but they all have double-silver-chevrons of experience or better. And of course Pyrrhus himself has a huge regenerating bodyguard. The Romans are still at peace with the Gauls, so they're not expanding at all.
I've also wondered about recreating the crossing of the AlpsIt's either that, or go conquer Greece and see if I get to play with some Thureophoroi.
Hmm, what kind of missiles are you talking about? I think they have a rather high armor rating, so armor-piercing stuff (slinger rounds) work pretty well.
I've had a run in with them and didn't notice much beyond the fact they're basically like Principe (and the normal Scutarii are like Hastati).
Wow, it takes 400 turns to win. Cool
