We don't have such run down houses in my country because they are an obvious health and safety risk and thus illegal.

But we do mix rich and poor here too, and that's a GOOD thing, much better than having ghetto's.

Must be the advantage of living in a country where class isn't that big an issue. Here in the we typically house immigrants in poorer parts of the city centres as trying to move migrants to richer suburbs meets with a lot of controversy and objection as good old middle class white folk don't want migrants moving in and reducing house prices. Since out politicians have as mush back bone as a snake local councils in richer areas won't allow too many migrants in otherwise they know they will get kicked out at the next election.

Saying that though Britain does have a proud tradition of helping people from all over the world who have been displaced due to war or have been exiled by a dictator and 95% of the people who move here do make a good life for themselves and their families.

Ghettos are still, unfortunately, a problem here in the US.

Yeah but cant recall ever seeing a "ghetto" building sitting right next to a modern, clean building and freshly paved road. Kinda of wierd Unles of course its part of redevelopment that hasnt finished yet but the condition of the road in that pic from Greece makes me believe that isnt the case here since roads generally get done last, atleast here they do here thanks to coming and going of construction vehicles.

What is the definition of Ghetto actually except "Place where poor minority stays, with high crime, low house value and rent" ?
The we could discuss where Ghettos exist.

What is the problem? A private ownership of a rundown building "surrounded" by better properties is usually a sign that redevelopment is around the corner. This is simply a natural part of Schumpeter's creative destruction. tO suggests anything more would require the original poster to provide more information.

What's going on with this thread? Is it complaining about immigrants, or is it about how lucky immigrants are to live next door to a "high tech building"?

Do you know song of Elvis Suspucious Minds i dedicate this to you

There is a problem in the political Mudpit
It is difficult people from different countries to unterstand each other even in the era of interent and globalisation.

I unterstand that in a thread i created a long time ago about immigration
a man from London can never unterstand the immigrant situation of Greece for i suppose the bigest majority of immigrants in UK are legal and camed through a logic situation(british Empire)
But in greece the recent 15 years reece has passed major changes from a state of 80-90% per cent Greeks and orthodoxs and had minimal crinimal rates to a state that waves of immigrants illegally pass the borders many drown on the way or killed in minefields on their dream to reach (Britain and etc) and to a explosion of crinimal rates(that still are among the lowest in Eu) . (For those that would get happy by calling me racist and etc i recall the EU annoucemnts and Reports that the huge immigrant wave can destabilze greece and Frontex reports).

So knowing all these and how much it is difficult to unterstand each other i was curious if a situation like this is logic in other Countries .

Is it logic in you country outside or near goverment buildings or even high corporate building to have just across a wreck building that is populated by drug dealers and users immigrants unter unhealthy situations
Or can you imagine outside of major Court Building to have illegal immigrants from Nigeria to sell copies of cds dvd and of clothes
Or behind your capital Mayor house to be offered drugs.
OR even in your best Universities to happen openly acts of crimal activity apart of being bases for Anarchists.

Is it logic in Italy Netherland USA Britain France Swiss Sweden Turkey and etc

And still you are not threatened but you will have to be a bit suspicious

The first thing that crossed my mind was that, how do you know illegal immigrants are living in that building, rather than legal immigrants or Greeks?

thats exactly i was speaking of
everyone in greece know that immigrants in greece in a large percent are illegal and those legal came to greece by illegal methods and made illegal through synoptic procedure

(I work near a park that people live in Bushes and sell pirate cds and etc do they sound legal? When police in summer started checks they all dissapeared)

Yes, but "everyone in Greece" is not necessarily correct. Are you going to answer my question?

Are you sure there are people living there? The graffiti outside the house says: "140 empty houses, 2000 homeless people".

Argentina (where the poverty level overpass the 30%) has a lot of "ghettos" (called here "villas de emergencia"), especially in the suburbs of the great metropolis (Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Tucumán, etc). There lives both inmigrants and argentinians, in the lowest social, educational and health levels. This happens because we have a bunch of incompetent, corrupt rogues in our government.
