"If I ever have any occasion to observe any man of the Brigade pick his road and go round a pool of water instead of marching through it I am fully determined to bring the officer commanding the Company to which that man belongs to Court Martial. Should the court acquit the officer it shall not deter me from repeating the same ceremony on any other officer again and again ...I will insist on every soldier marching through water and I will flog any man attempting to avoid it."
Major-General Robert Crauford on the conduct of the Light Division when on the march.
"No doubt he is sometimes a little mad, but in his lucid intervals he is an uncommonly clever fellow; and I trust he will have no fit during the campaign, though he looked a little wild as he embarked."
Response from Horse Guards to Wellington's complaint that Sir William Erskine was to take over command of the Light Division, on the grounds that the man was 'generally understood to be mad.'

“My mother taught me never to throw stones at cripples. My father taught me to aim for their heads.”
- Ramsay Snow
That has to be one of the most quotable movies ever....such classic lines delivered in old school Arnie speak. It's up there with "Starship Troopers I" and "The Godfather I".
I'm going with Welington's "It was a damn close run thing" re: Waterloo. Thought someone else would have gotten in with that by now...
"I'll tell you what rule sir....we applied Rule 303. We caught them and we shot them under RULE THREE OH THREE!"
"Shoot straight you bastards, don't make a mess of it!"
My quote by Wellington I found more inspiring and is applicable to all areas of life really (akin to Patton's "Always do your damnedest!"). But don't worry chap; just about everything Wellington said is worthy of being quoted. For example that Hudson Lowe, gaoler of Napoleon on St. Helena, was "a very bad choice; he was a man wanting in education and judgement. He was a stupid man, he knew nothing at all of the world, and like all men who knew nothing of the world, he was suspicious and jealous."![]()
Wellington when asked to comment on a history of the battle of Waterloo.
"Sir, if thats what happened, then clearly I was not present."
Napoleon on history.
"History is a set of lies which has been agreed upon."
Napoleon on hen-pecked husbands.
"There is no greater misfortune for a man than to be governed by his wife: in such case he is neither himself nor his wife, he is a perfect nonentity."
Napoleon on the French.
"The French complain of everything, and always."
A French General (can't remember which one) on the British Infantry
"The English are not good soldiers, merely stupid, I can drive in their centre, I can turn their flanks, and still they do not realise that they have lost the battle."

He who fears being conquered is sure of defeat - Napoleon Bonaparte

"Give me night or give me blucher!" Wellington on the eve of waterloo
Good quotes! keep em coming! maybe, just maybe CA will take a look here!
I hope N:TW only has quotes from or about the Napoleonic era or quotes by people that played some role during that time. I mean, the Art of War is great but it shouldn't be a problem to find fitting quotes about muskets, cannons and Frenchmen...

" Horses have no patriotism; soldiers fight without bread, but horses insist on oats."
General Etienne-Marie-Antoine Champion de Nansouty
"In the career of glory one gains many things; the gout and medals, a pension and rheumatism....And also frozen feet, an arm or leg the less, a bullet lodged between two bones which the surgeon cannot extract....all of these fatigues experienced in your youth, you pay for when you grow old. Because one has suffered in years gone by, it is necessary to suffer more, which does not seem exactly fair. "
" Don't you know that the Guard's donkeys have the ranks of mules? "

The domestic of Latour-Maubourg was left weeping after his master had lost a leg below the knee at the battle of Leipzig, to which the General responded:
" What are you crying about, man, you have one less boot to polish "
General Marie-Victor-Nicolas de Fay Latour-Maubourg
Lasalle died at the age of 34 by the way but I think one can forgive him that.

I remember an anecdote from the Seven Year's War, which I hope isn't too off topic.
Frederick II was marching past a field execution, with a cavalry officer about to be strung up. Frederick recognises the officer who he had previously decorated for bravery.
"Why is that man being executed? What is his offense?" asked Frederick.
"He was found committing bestiality with his horse, sire" replied the commander.
Hard pressed for men and ever the pragmatist, Frederick replied "Then, for God's sake man, transfer him to the infantry!"
"I'll tell you what rule sir....we applied Rule 303. We caught them and we shot them under RULE THREE OH THREE!"
"Shoot straight you bastards, don't make a mess of it!"
"Die hard 57th, die hard!"
Lt. Colonel William Inglis 57th Foot, at the Battle of Albuera 1811
"Regardez ces chevaux gris. Qui sont ces beaux cavaliers. Ce sont des braves troupes mais dans une demi heure je les couperai en pieces. Quelles braves troupes. Commes ils travaillent ils travaillent tres-bien, tres bien!"
Napoleon commenting on the seeing the Scots Greys for the first time. Roughly translated it reads 'Look at those gray horses. Who are those beautiful riders. They are brave troops but in a half hour I will cut them in parts.'
and later:
"Qu'ils sont terribles ces chevaux gris. Il faut nous depecher, nous depecher."
They are terrible these grey horse. We must destroy them. destroy them.
"If it was not for this [patting the eauplet on his shoulder], I would let you know that Colonel Mainwaring has an iron fist."
Colonel Mainwaring 51st Foot, remonstrating with one of his men.
