The extra package as described for the mod is essential if all you want to mod for is to play multiplayer?

I'd say no it's not essential for MP. It's possible that if one player has it and the other does not then it may make the installs incompatible.

The only thing that will stop this from being incompatible is if the check for the installs only checks the data folder as the extras are in their own folder at the same level as the data folder.

What's probably more important for compatibility of installs is the map.rwm file. I know at one stage we either used one supplied or deleted it from the folder before playing MP.
