Default The romans lose there city hoplites ?

Hey guys, First post in this mod's forum, so forgive me if i missed a faq or whatever somewhere.

I noticed in my early roman game i began to get access to some sweet hoplite units, hoplites of tarentum, of sicily, and especially of syracuse, but almost right after i hit the imperial reforms and lost access to these totally rad units !

Now, im using 1.6, but i remember this happening in 1.5 too, and im still a little pissed. I get the whole "the roman empire phased out native militaries in favor of its own" thing, but im still rather annoyed that us roman players lose those cool units.

So heres my question, how can i allow these units to be accessable for the romans after the marius (imperial) reforms ?
I figure it must be a script; I looked in "Export descr buildings" but it seemed perfectly fine, i checked out the EDU too and again, it looked all clear.

Thanks, I was really looking forward to grabbing spartan hoplites someday.

PS: I also cant seem to make the castra praetorium in rome, could someone go over that buildings requirements ?

    Thanks !

Not sure how you change that, I know as you go east and north you can get different units - some nice heavy cavalry in Britain, Cataphracts to the east and some better archers, so I guess it is a case of wait and good things will come to you - well when you conquer and build up the cities of course - but then this is Total War so no use sitting at home warming yours toes at the hearth when you could be getting a lovely blazing fire from a Barbarian city or two to get an all over warmth right?

As to the 2nd, you need Field of Mars and Latifundia - highest level of farming, usually catches most people out - got to have lots of food to make big strong Praetorians right

You weren't looking close enough, I guess.

Look for lines like the following in the EDB:
recruit "greek hoplite spartan" 1 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource sparta
recruit "athenian hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource legio18 and hidden_resource gre
recruit "bosporan hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop1
    recruit "byzantine hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource legio16 and not hidden_resource no_way
recruit "corinthian hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop2
recruit "cretan hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop3
recruit "cyprus hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop4
recruit "cyrene hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop5
recruit "ephesian hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop6
    recruit "pergamum hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource legio4 and hidden_resource no_way
recruit "rhodian hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop7
recruit "sicilian hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource sicily
recruit "syracuse hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop8
recruit "tarentum hoplite" 0 requires factions { roman, } and not marian_reforms and hidden_resource hop9
remove the "and not marian_reforms", then it'll be recruitable all the time

    To add to Alavaria's response,

You'll have to do that twice (for the Army and Royal level of barracks).

I'm thinking of doing it for the Army Barracks since even post-reforms I could keep building city hoplites to add to the regional flavor of the legions --until I build the last barracks, of course.

historical accuracy be damned, you know spartan-praetorian stacks are matches made in Elysium... or whatever the romans call heaven.

Even better would be Praetorians recruited in Sparta! All of the superior tactics and organization of the legions, with the bloodlust of the Spartans. If they still had it at that point...I heard that Sparta was only at top shape for a pretty short period.

Lighten up Lysimachus. If the man wants to use the word rad, more power to him.

By the way, I just ran a custom battle pitting Praetorians against Spartan Hoplites, all gold chevons and armor on both sides and the Praetorians just chewed up the Spartans and spat them out.

I did basically the same battle without all the gold upgrades. Haha.
    My praetorians won as well!

    Just a warning ...

Theres a very real and practical reason why some of these units where "phased" out. You can only recruit 30 some (I think ... DVK or someone on the build team would know for sure) units per region. The more units you add to a region, the more likely you will get above the 30 some unit cutoff. When that happens, your game WILL crash, but not until the 31st unit or whatever the number is becomes available.

So how do you know for certain if you've added too many units? You don't, until you've invested hours and hours into a campaign to get the Marian reforms. You can fix it, of course, but it's a bit of a hassle ...

    Now you know.
