Iberia campaign: Ambakaro vs Heavy Scutarii

Ambakaro units have half as many soldiers as the other Iberian infantry units, I am shocked to find upon completing my first Hundredmen Hall.

Heavy Scutarii, on Large Unit size, have 100 men. Ambakaro have 50 men. HS have slightly more defense, Amb's slightly more offense and an extra HP. All other traits the same besides Amb's "Expert at Hiding In Woods" (lol). Oh, and Amb's cost 500 upkeep a turn compared to HS 400 upkeep.

Are Amb's better/worth it, or is it better to stick with Heavy Scutarii? My standard battlefield tactic has been to hoard HS, stretch the lines thin, run forward and and envelope the enemy; it has been working like a charm. I have 17 provinces atm, containing all of spain through central france. I keep an army stationed at Gibraltar to hold off a persistent Carthage whilst I plan an invasion of Britain, using a weak Gaul/Indie Gaul as an intentional standing buffer to keep my borders separate from the mighty Romans, who along with Thrace have killed off Germany.

I'm using 5.9.1 version of XGM Normal/Normal diff with AI bonuses and landbridges on, slow unit speed and no fatigue.

That extra hp and attack makes them excellent shoock troops for assualting walls and charging flanks, use the scutarii for the line and ambakaro's for the flanks, frontaltal assualt or counter attack for maximum effect.

Use both. HS more for the anvil work and Ambakaro's for the hammer, together with your cav

Scutarii will always win.

Seriously though, use both. A unit or two of Abakaro's in a stack as your elite shock troops (flankers and such) and Heavy Scutarii as line troops.

the protruding bulldog-like lower jaw clearly differentiates my avatar-- representing a Pygocentrus piranha species-- from any pacu, who have an overbite if anything.
