    Default Some Basic Questions

Hi, ive been playing RTR Platinum for quite a while now and would like to install Extended Realism after extensively reading this forum....it seems like an excellent mod and i would love to play it

However, i am extremely computer illiterate and always seem to have trouble installing new mods or patches

Right now, i have Rome Total war 1.5 with RTR Platinum installed to it. I know that i need a clean copy of Rome Total War to play Extended Realism, but how do i do that? Do i just copy all of the files from Rome Total War? Or do i reinstall the entire game and replace what i already have? Is there anyway to have multiple copies of the vanilla game on your computer? (Sorry for the stupid questions i just dont know)

Next, I do not have Barbarian Invasion. I have read the sticky on how to play Extended Realism on RTW 1.5.... and i dont really understand it... and can i still use the no nonsense installer?

Im very sorry for the inconvenience its just that i really enjoy playing the TW series and some of the mods you guys have created are absolutely phenominal, except that i dont know how to install them
    Thanks again

Cool, I'm glad you liked the forum. I like it here, too.

That's cool. We'll try to help you.

First, is it the mod-switch RTRPE? If not, or if you have no idea, just make a new installation of RTW and patch it up to 1.5. You don't have to replace what you have, just name the directory something different when you install.

I think so. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, you can still take the steps to make it work. It's really simple to change it.

(In other words, which installer you use won't matter. It'll either work or it won't, but I think it will.)

ok i installed 3.4 successfully and extracted and copied patch 3.5.1 hotfix, but when i double clicked the icon on my desktop it said it could not find the program, and then i clicked on the EX icon so now every time i double click the icon it just goes to the picture viewing thing

so now what? is it because i do not have BI installed? do i now have to go and delete all instances of whatever posted by patricianS?

I tried the same thing and found out that the Extended Realism shortcut points to the Barbarian Invasion .exe file. Right click the shortcut and select "Properties." There you'll find the Shortcut Target or something, and it should tell you something like this:

    "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-BI.exe" -nm -show_err -mod:ExRM

    or

    "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-BI.exe" -nm -show_err -mod:ExRM

Now, if you want to run this with Rome, just change it to this:

    "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -nm -show_err -mod:ExRM

    or

    "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -nm -show_err -mod:ExRM

and it should work (without the features from Barbarian Invasion).

    Good luck!

Nope, the problem is that your shortcut isn't pointing to the right folder.

Right-click on your shortcut and select Properties.

Figure out where your ExRM directory is and copy/paste that directory name from the bar at the top of the window between the quotation marks on the "target" line. Don't delete the name of the exe at the end of that line, but delete the "-BI" from the name of the exe.

    Did that make any sense?

Yes, actually, I think I know precisely what's wrong. The Briton slinger was a unit that disappeared between 3.4.1 and 3.5. Therefore, you've got all of 3.4.1 installed, but only part of 3.5. *rereads thread*

Ok, I see what I missed earlier. Sorry, I wasn't sufficiently specific above. Here's what you need to do.

Download the full 3.5 patch and extract that to a folder on your desktop. Then, extract the 3.5.1 patch again and copy it into that folder, overwriting as you go (if you don't get an overwrite prompt, you're copying to the wrong location). Then, once you have that done, copy that whole combined folder into the same place you copied the 3.5.1 patch into.

ok i appreciate your help but now i am getting really frustrated, when i did what you said i loaded the game and it said 3.5 and i was like, oh good i must've done this right.....but then i tried to start a campaign and it just went right back to the main screen, and when i quit i got another error concerning a settlement

EDIT: when i say main screen i mean like when you click single player and you have a choice of new campaign, historical battle, or custom battle....every time i try a new campaign this is what it does and a different script error pops up every time i quit

ALSO, i reinstalled Extended Realism and downloaded the patches but i did not copy them yet, so i tried playing just on 3.4 to see if it worked and it didnt, once again same situation i try a new campaign/historical battle and it just goes back to the single player menu and when i when i quit i get a script error concerning libyan spearmen i believe

    Strange. What was the error?

Also, did you make sure to overwrite the 3.5 files with the 3.5.1 files and not the other way around?

yes and then where do i put that big folder? in the ExRM one? do i just copy the data folder or the docs one too?

but either way like i said when i try and start a new campaign with JUST 3.4, i still cant even do that...i surfed through loads of old posts and i found one guy who had the same problem and he fixed it, but he didnt say how http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=298348

he was using 3.3.4 i think but then he tried it with 3.4 too and it didnt work

do i need to go into my vanilla game and change some of the scripts or something? ive been reading some other posts with people who said to do that

Could you tell me precisely what the error was? Once you've done the overwrites, 3.4 won't work anymore.

Yes, you put that big folder into the ExRM folder such that "data" overwrites "data" and "docs" overwrites "docs."

    Edit:
Oh, you just posted. I'm glad you've got it working.

Ok, if you're worried about messing everything up, just copy your ExRM directory and name it ExRM 3.5 Backup or something.

What does the ExRM splash screen say? Which version do you have working?

ok it was painful but i got 3.4 working, when i copy the 3.5 patch however when i load the game it says i got 3.5 working so thats good, but when i try and start a campaign i get an error report and it says it has to close, its not a script error or anthing just one of those microsoft needs to know the problem ones

if i cant figure it out ill be extremely satisfied with 3.4, ive already played some battles and it truly is amazing, you did a great job

so thanks for all the help and ill still try and see if i can get 3.5 to work

You're quite welcome. I hope you can get 3.5 to work, but 3.4.1 is a solid release and I think you'll enjoy it.

That's an interesting error. Do you have -Show_err in your shortcut?

I have tried overwriting 3.5 wth 3.5.2 now and copying it into my ExRM folder, and yet when i try and start a campaign i get the error that Rome TW/BI (i finally got BI) has detected a problem and needs to close.....please tell microsoft about this problem. When i start the game the bottom right says im running 3.5.2 but i cant start a campaign

i definitely have "show_err" in my campaign shortcut.....right now im just playing 3.4 and id like to update my game now and in the future, so this is getting really frustrating

please any suggestions would be highly appreciated,
    thank you

I also have a small question.
I noticed in the mercenary window there is a new unit which is not supposed to be recruited with a high price and... it helps preventing rebellion?! How exactly does it work?
