What do you think of armed guards on shipping?

Freedom is the distance between church and state.
Should have been there from day one.
Simple way to deal with piracy
I think it's a bad idea. It blurs the line between civilians and the military, and it risks escalating an already bad situation.
And besides, it's not like private security companies have an unblemished record of professional behaviour.
Under the stern but loving patronage of Nihil.
I don't see the problem here. They are in a boat in the ocean, if another boat tries to get close to you, it's pretty clear they are up to no good. To avoid collisions, well meaning boats will not get close to another one, so there shouldn't be any "mistakes" like you see in the middle east regarding those private security companies.
Yes, but unlike private security companies, some of whom are packing quite a bit of heat, you're not selling your services to the highest bidder to play policeman in your neighborhood.
The navies are there to patrol those waters and keep merchant ships safe, it should be left to them, and not a private company aboard the individual ships. The companies have already shown that they're by and large completely incapeable of operating in a country, imagine the grey zone they'll be in when they're in international waters.
Given the complete mess Somalia is in, the desperation of the general population, the very big money involved in piracy, and the lack of will to do anything about it, other than protect the prescious cargo aboard the ships, it can get a lot worse.

Except it sure as heck isn't working. Every time Somalia is mentioned, 8/10 it's a pirate story.
The sailors have more to protect than their precious cargo. They also have their lives to protect. Just because some of the pirates are willing to ransom doesn't mean that all will be as kind. I don't know about you, but I absolutely refuse to entrust my life to the whims of another, especially when he is armed and I am not.Given the complete mess Somalia is in, the desperation of the general population, the very big money involved in piracy, and the lack of will to do anything about it, other than protect the precious cargo aboard the ships, it can get a lot worse.
Machiavelli was right, you know. Being unarmed only causes you to be despised.
Personally I question the economic sense of doing so. Do you have any idea how expensive it is to pay security personal for extended voyages on the off chance that the ship and crew might be taken hostage? There's a reason it hasn't been universally adopted by shipping in the region, mostly because it drives the overhead operating costs so drastically high. Oddly enough, It's cheaper for them to pay ransoms.
Take it easy,
They were not there in the past because the pirates were or could of been armed with RPGs and other rocket type weapons that could potentially damage the hull. When the pirate ride around in a little skiff its not hard to hit a target 3 or 4x their size.
Seems a good idea to me as long as they don't mistakenly start shooting fishermen.

You should have the right to protect your investment and your sailors. They dont prefer to work for you under the risk of pirate capture and potential 2-10 months of captivity.
Good idea. They need to add security forces every ship that passes through every piracy area. I don't believe this will get things worse. Pirates find easy targets and not targets who fire back.
“Nothing could be more dangerous to the existence of this Republic than to introduce religion into politics”
Good idea. Obvious solution. Really pathetic it hadn't been done, well, before the problem even arose.

About time. I look at our laws, and there is all this idiocy about having a plan to man the fire hoses if you are on a ship. Fire hoses against RPGs? They need to put deck guns and train crews on tanker shipping, or, hire escort boats. It is ludicrous that our innate domesticated view of 'Guns oh dear..frightful things, let's wave a garden hose at them all and say please go away nasty pirates!' is just so idiotic.
Man up, or give up the shipping lanes to pirates. Have people on watch with some thermal sights attached to assault rifles and i imagine the sea jihad will quickly come to a grinding halt.
So by that rationale, if we fit out our armies with supersoakers and custard pies - everyone else that opposes us will do the same? Make our weaponry as ineffective as possible, and the enemy will do the same.yes the next level could very well be damage the ship with RPG fire, murder the surviving crew for resisting and sell the cargo.
The pirates need to know - if you attack ships - they will come back swinging. If I was on those tankers, I could deal with the pirates attacking if I knew I could shoot back. What would be intolerable is being on them and having nothing
to fight back with.

Yes I'm sure that the jihadi pirates are just misunderstood environmental crusaders, and we've had them all wrong.
Who dumps stuff there? I don't know. And how is that the fault of commercial shipping? It's not like people who dump nuclear waste, and I dont doubt it happens, are going to listen to a show of hands that they not do it? Why are 'we' responsible for who is dumping what there?
