Astounding Fleet Movement
As part of my Total War strategy, I like to have a significant presence on the high seas. I blockade and starve my enemies, I sink their fleets, I occupy choke points. I station small fleets within supporting distance of each other, criss crossing the seas. It happens from time to time that a large enemy fleet will pick off a few of my smaller fleets until its movement is spent; I then respond with a concentration of my remaining nearby fleets on my enemy. When the enemy flees after combat, it ends its move near another concentration of my fleets, which attack it, and send it fleeing again. I repeat as often as I can so as to sink the fleet in a single turn if possible.
In every version of MTW2 I have played in the past, the enemy does not flee far, and sinks after the third combat it has lost in a turn.
Not so in SV. There is no guarantee that a fleet will sink after it has lost its third combat, which is fine for me. But I have witnessed some astounding movements. For example, I engaged an enemy fleet in the western Mediterranean not far from Gibralter, and it fled all the way to the Aegean!! What is even more astounding is that after I engaged it in the Aegean, it fled back to the western Mediterranean. Attacking it again, it fled then up the Adriatic to near Venice. I attacked again, and it's final movement took it to the eastern Med, near Antioch, where I finally sunk it. It was a big fleet.
In a single turn, that large enemy fleet probably sailed enough miles to circumnavigate the earth. I would like to suggest that in future revisions, such astounding movement be limited.

Personally, I like the fact that the fleets move long distances - the kind of running battles which you describe is roughly what happened, as far as I know. Also it is fairly realistic - afterall, one turn is six months, and needing several turns just to go from one end of the mediterranean to the other ins simply insane.

Re: Astounding Fleet Movement
well if you really think about it each turn is 6 months and if the boats move like in medieval 2 then a trip from the holy land to say france or spain would take an eternity (i would personally like that ships had a supply system)
